Character Animation reel
A compilation of 3D character animations.
One of the biggest examples of this is the basketball dunk.
Beginning with a simple thumbnail breakdown, this helped me better understand the movement of every part and the effects they have on one another. The most complex part of this sequence is the way the player turns in the air by the force of the hold.
I wanted to capture that and manage to create that sense of acceleration before the jump to make a cohesive move.
In this video I dive into the stages of the animation, the failed routes and attempts before arriving at the final destination.
One of the things I find very useful is to take my sequence onto Blender and begin following arcs and visualize the parts that are not completely working. I make notes on the margins and then export right back to Maya to continue working. This allows me the freedom to take into consideration the smallest details at a time, things that I may forget when focusing on the bigger issues. Here's a frame example of the notes.
