Concept art journey. 2023
Hi! Here we are another year. After finishing my master's degree in concept art I've been studying anatomy, color theory, render... hile I was taking side jobs. It's been a tough year, but I'm seeing some improvement. What do you think? Hope you like it!
DnD Party
DnD has been a good exercise for me to develop different skills and try different styles. I'm showing you three characters that I developed this year and the different goals that I had with each one.
Fratley
Character Concept Art and Illustration
Fratley is a dragonborn paladin. His meant to be a serious and strong character. I decided to go with a styliced design and a simple lineart to focus on render. The most important part is his armor, wich I worked to be showy but functional.
I started by looking for the dragonborn look. I wanted it to be like a reptile but still human. After that explorations I did some designs to find the armor. I also took time to define the shield and the naginata, the eastern weapon that looks like a spear.
I also did two alternative versions. The first one is a darker design because of the evolution of the character. The second one was made without the lineart to improve my render and volume skills.
Scrappy
Character Concept Art and Illustration
As a gnome artificer, Scrappy is supposed to look smart and chaotic. I tried to achive a more styliced appearence for this character and I wanted to reflect his openminded and happy mood with his design.
I spent so much time working on his fisical features and his pose to achive the feeling I was looking for.
I started working on a more childish look and then it become the final design.
Naidra
Character Concept Art and Illustration
Naidra is a half-elf sorcerer. He is a tricky and funny character and I wanted to show that attitude with the design. I chose a stylized comic-like aesthetic and a cool lineart to give it that strengh.
The first step was to look for the physical appearence and then I worked the outfit. I wanted it to be kind of exotic and colorfull to complement his nature.
Redesign Projects
As an exercise, I did some redesigns that I want to show you:
Android Arturo
Character Redesign Concept Art
At the beggining of my master degree in Concept Art I made a character based on the brief that a friend wrote for me. Once I ended classes I wanted to redesign this character to see how much improvement I had made.
Here you can see the first concept that I did and the alternative version made a month after it. The concepts below those are made trying to achive better shapes and focusing on BMS. It was so important for me to be loyal to the brief.
Dark Assasin
Character Reinterpretation
This is an original concept from Irene Espina Sanchez (you can find her on Rookies). As a exercise, we exchanged designs between some frinds and tried to adapt it to our style. Here's my attempt.
Weekly Concepts
As an exercise to create new ideas, I made concept art based on random words each week. here are some of the best work that I get:
Bloodborne Gardener
Character Concept Art
Ink Archer
Character Concept Art
Aboatado
Vehicle Concept Art
Student Projects:
The Tsar's Secret
The last year I joined a team to develop a videogame as our students' project. Here's some of the concpet art that I made for it:
Enviroment 3D Blocking to Concept Art
Here's a little concept for the house of Wayne, one of the characters that I presented on Rookies 22.
Titan Guardian
He's the one who knocks on Wayne's door when he gets in trouble. You shouldn't make him angry.
I wanted this kind of medieval style mixed with an futur aesthetic because of the setting of the projects from past year. I've also tried to go for a mixed realistic-stilyced render, looking for a sculptural appearance.
Creature Concept
Last year I showed this project when it was in progress and know I have finished it!. It suffered lots of changes, going through a 3D phase. I ended up running away from the realistic style and embracing fantasy.
Here you can see the stage where I was last year and the process to the final concept.
Bonus:
Inazuma Eleven Fannart Illustration
As a side project, I developped this illustration. I used a different style, much more styliced and deformed, and I felt much more confident with it. I'm looking forward to explore this and all the possibilities that brings to me.
That's It!
Thank you so much for taking the time to see my work. I would appreciate so much any feedback that you would like to give me! I still have a long paht to travel and I can use any advice.
I hope I can bring you a way better work next year, I will studie to improve as much as possible and a little bit more.
See you!
