Welcome!

As I conclude my time at SCAD, I'm proud to present a small selection of my favorite projects crafted during my journey as a motion graphics student. Over the course of the past four years, I have been afforded invaluable opportunities to delve into various tools and concepts that have shaped my artistic sensibilities as a motion designer. Through this body of work, my intention is to demonstrate both my commitment to learning, and my unwavering curiosity within the realm of design.

Indianapolis 500 Event Package

The Greatest Spectacle in Racing

The Indianapolis 500 is an annual automobile race that takes place every Memorial Day at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. This race draws fans from around the world to witness drivers race about 500 miles around a track. Growing up in Indianapolis I was familiar with the racing traditions and culture, but never witnessed the race on broadcast television.

My objective was to celebrate the tradition and historical significance of the race while maintaining the sleek and technology forward brand of NBC Sports. By displaying the assembly of the Indy car, I was able to visualize a very mechanical and sleek identity for package.

Process and 3D Look development

Designed using Maxon's Cinema 4D and the Redshift.

Broadcast and Social Media Toolkit

My final deliverables for the tool kit included lower thirds, a mortise, intro/ outro transitions, and finally a social media teaser for the event. By reusing existing assets of the car, logo, and color palette, I was able to achieve a cohesive and versatile package.

Equinox

Transition of the Seasons

The arrival of the spring equinox marks a time of seasonal transition. Our environment is in a constant cycle of color, shapes, and beautiful elements that we often overlook. Equinox is an abstract piece that simulates the seasons through representational elements and graceful transition.

Over the course of 12 weeks, I was challenged to design a seamless loop that would fit the different aspect ratios often associated with social media.

Hand-drawn Storyboards + Shotlist

I explored producing techniques and strategies to stay on track throughout this project. This Included storyboards, a shotlist, and a production timeline.

Motion Test

Creating a seamless 10-15 second loop required a few motion tests to get a sense of rhythm and pacing.

Styleframes

Designed and developed using Maxon's Cinema 4D and Redshift

S-BOT

Memories Unlocked

When we fall asleep, our mind engages in the process of memory consolidation, whereby the memories from that particular day are processed and stored in our long-term memory. This concept was explicated in our psychology class. S-bot emulates the sleep cycle of a robot and explores the intricate mechanism of memory processing within an abstract universe.

For my senior capstone, I wanted to focus on something related to my passion for technology. What started from a few sketches and a couple episodes of Love Death, and Robots, resulted in a subject that connects us all with the digital world. That subject is memory.

Look Development

Designed and animated in Maxon's Cinema 4D and Redshift.

Final Note

My desire to learn doesn’t end with a diploma. While the world of design has evolved with complex technology, it’s expanded new opportunities, and has provided a new wave of tools for young creatives like me. As I enter my next chapter as a designer, I'm excited to see what lies ahead for all of us.

Cheers,
Samantha Woods
