Stylized Characters Collection

Ward Dermaut
by WardDermaut on 1 Jun 2023 for Rookie Awards 2023

Hi guys! This entry is a collection of stylized characters I made over the past year. Both based on my own design and designs from other 2D artists. I tried to mostly focus on shape and silhouette to make the characters really stand out. All feedback is welcome!

Teenage Survivor

This character is based on my own design and I had a ton of fun making this guy. I tried to model him completely in Zbrush and tried to keep my topology as low as possible for the majority of the time. I learned that by doing that, I had a lot of control of the shapes and silhouette and could achieve a clean and stylized look.

I learned a ton on this project and it helped me to figure out a workflow that allows me to work in a style that I really like.

Grumpy Silverback Gorilla

This chunky gorilla is based on a lot of photo reference and some sketches I did before hand. I had a lot of fun figuring out the anatomy of a gorilla and stylizing and exaggerating his shapes and proportions. I modeled him from scratch in Zbrush and did a quick retopo in Maya, just to make the process of posing in Zbrush a bit smoother.

Chinese Pirate

This determined looking pirate was my first ever 3D character model, based on an awesome design by Cesar Vergara. This was an assignment for the stylized design course at Digital Arts & Entertainment where the goal was to go trough the full 3D character pipeline, including modeling, retopology, baking and texturing en finally posing and rendering.

This assignment thought me all the basics I needed to know to start working on my own projects in the future and it made me really love making 3D characters.
