Hello, I'm Sher Jeat from Malaysia. These are the concept arts I made for my assignments which are mostly related to games.
The first project is "The Ultimate Recipe", an idea of a fantasy exploration game that involves the elements of cooking and tower crawling. I created this project starting from writing the background story of the world based on the gameplay, with the main character killing the monsters to collect the ingredients and create different types of dishes. It was difficult to develop a whole new world setting because I not only need to consider the aesthetic, but also the rules, society, cultures, history, and relation of the characters in this world. It’s my first time to write a proper setting of a new world, so I was clueless at first. However, after sharing the world setting with my friends and lecturer, I received a lot of feedback and it helps me a lot on worldbuilding before I even start on the concept art.
After I am done with the documents about the world setting, I start worldbuilding using notan arts and matte painting to get an overall aesthetic about the world in the fastest way. Firstly, I created 9 notan arts revolving scenery you can see in a fantasy world. I picked two artworks and further explored them by value study and line art. Lastly, I made a matte painting of the tower scenery so I can experiment with the atmosphere I want to achieve in this project.
Next, I worked on the matte painting of the game’s keyframe. The keyframe is focused on the main location of the game, which is Crossan Tower on top of the mountain. To highlight Crossan Tower as the tallest tower that is near to the sky where God stays, the sea of clouds are formed surrounding the mountains.
After that, I started developing the concept arts of the character, creature, mechanical and architecture. During this process, I follow the workflow of creating silhouettes, visual library, line art, base colour and rendering.
The last concept art is the game level design. The game level’s location is the entrance of the Crossan Tower, which is the lowest building of the tower. To create the interior of the game level, I first drafted out the top down layout of the level and built a simple 3D blockout using 3DS Max as a reference.
The second project is "Astraphobia", a pc game I made with my teammates for the assignment. "Astraphobia" is a 2D puzzle-platform video game. Player plays as a young teen who is afraid of lightning using his fear to find his way out the dark forest. The game’s main feature is using lighting to illuminate the surroundings and solve the environmental puzzle. In this project, I made concept art of the main character and level 2 environment, which is an abandon factory.
These are the mockups of the in game scene.
The third project is “Shadow”, a 3D mobile game I made with my teammates for the assignment. "Shadow" is an adventure puzzle platform game where in a land of magic and fantasy, the residents of a kingdom are hunted by creatures lurking within the shadows. The people that fall victim to the creatures will become blighted. “Those that become blighted shall have their freedom robbed for all eternity”. You play as the princess of the kingdom, attempting to save the people in distraught while trying to figure out why the princess's shadow has a will of her own and the sudden changes of the Queen. In this project, I was in charge of the character's design, modelling and animation. I also did the 2d cutscenes for the game.
