Round of applause for our sponsors

Hey, hey, hey!

Nice to meet you! I'm Isabelle, a graphic and motion designer from Jakarta, Indonesia, currently completing my final year of studies at the Savannah College of Art and Design. Growing up, I've always loved watching films and music videos, and as a result, these interests of mine are inevitably reflected in my work.

I like to think of my work as a series of explorations and experiments of ideas and styles that I'm curious to explore during different periods of my life. When I'm not busy trying to perfect my keyframes on the graph editor, I like to incorporate my design skills into other fields like photography and AR/VR.

The next few things you'll see are a collection of personal work I've created during my time here at SCAD. Enjoy! :)

IDEAFest 2023 Concept Conference Titles

Wiring Connection. Powering Change. Redefining the Future.

This piece is a mock title for IdeaFest, Indonesia's biggest festival and conference celebrating the convergence of culture, art, and technology. It is undoubtedly one of the most anticipated events for the nation's creatives and is becoming an essential destination for global entrepreneurs, storytellers, and curious individuals. Every year, IdeaFest offers various panels, discussions, and programs that empower creative communities and encourage them to unleash their full potential.

Inspired by the root cause of the event and the different themes they've had in the past, the main goal of this piece is to visualize the sense of community the event brings and the emphasis on creativity and the future. To achieve this, a vibrant color scheme and a playful design system composed of different unique abstract shapes are used. The shapes' journey highlights the event's three main focuses – connection, transformation, and the future. The form of the abstract shapes was also inspired by artists who explore ideas of metamorphosis and change in their works, such as Yoshimasa Kato, Yuichi Ito, and Mariko Mori.

'SKY CASTLE' Title Sequence Rebrand

The Road to Perdition, the Sins of Mankind.

"Sky Castle" is a 2018-2019 South Korean television series that aired on JTBC on Fridays and Saturdays. At the time of airing, it became the highest-rating drama in Korean cable television history. It is a satire drama that focuses on upper-class families' desires, goals, and avarice and how everything revolves around academia. The story centers on four wealthy families, but the show focuses explicitly on the women of the family who oversee these homes and how they micromanage everything. These families reside in a luxurious residential area called SKY Castle, which is a reference to the three most prestigious universities - Seoul National University, Korea University, and Yonsei University.

The authenticity of the characters and their intriguing stories amplify the existing social issues of today’s world as they obscure immorality in pursuit of power, wealth, and social status – the road to perdition, the sins of mankind. The unexpected plot twists and foreshadowing lines present throughout the show are embodied in the design language of the title sequence. Additionally, because a complex story of social satire is incredibly heavy, this title sequence rebrand juxtaposes the disquieting tone with a seemingly playful imagery.

This project was done in collaboration with fellow motion designer Tiffany Tedy. Both of us were involved in the ideating, brainstorming, storyboarding, designing, editing, and animating process. The project was a very collaborative experience and the two of us contributed to all the shots in the sequence to varying extents. With that said, I mainly worked on the first half of the sequence while Tiffany worked on the second half of the sequence.

'1984' Concept Title Sequence

Memory Is A Powerful Weapon

Published on June 8, 1949, "1984" is a dystopian satirical, political, and social science novel by George Orwell. The story explores themes such as totalitarianism's dangers, language as mind control, surveillance, censorship, and propaganda. The story takes place in a world where an ever-surveillant State uses indoctrination, lies, fear, and severe punishment to force total conformity in its subjects. The story is told from a third-person perspective and focuses on a character named Winston Smith.

In the novel, memory is shown to play a crucial role in illustrating the dangers of totalitarianism and the manipulation of the past by the Party. The Party controls the people's perception of history by rewriting and falsifying past records. Throughout the novel, Winston's battles in pursuit of the truth and reconnection with his past become a threat to the Party. Additionally, this novel also shows how memory could be used as a tool of resistance and personal identity. This raises the question, what are we without our memories?

With that said, this title sequence navigates Orwell's classic dystopian story from the perspective of Winston and his battle in attempting to reconnect with his past – his only way to preserve his sense of individuality. Hazy visuals and flickering text effects are used to visualize Winston's clouded memory and foreshadow the novel's ending. Additionally, a muted and gloomy collage style hints to the viewers at the story's setting and plot. Finally, these dreary visuals are juxtaposed with the beautiful and majestic national anthem of Oceania to further highlight the society's loyalty and undying love for Big Brother, the leader of Oceania.

HITC Jakarta Concept Promo

Head In The Clouds (HITC) is an annual festival organized by 88rising, a media company and record label that focuses on Asian talents across the world. Known as the ”Asian Coachella," the festival spotlights Asian music, food, fashion, and culture. Similar to previous HITC announcement promos, this event promo advertises and informs viewers of the event through a design language appropriate to the brand while using typography as the main driver of the piece. In addition, the promo aims to deliver the event's overall energy, atmosphere, and vibe through dynamic transitions, bold colors, and kinetic typography. More importantly, to fulfill its purpose, the promo will also include other relevant information, such as the lineup, the date, and the event's location, as well as a call-to-action section that directs viewers to the event's website.

Productivity Anxiety - Styleframes

Inspired by Rupi Kaur's 2022 piece with the same name, these styleframes explore and visualize the feeling of inadequacy that comes with productivity anxiety, using typography as its main element. A monochromatic color palette and geometric shapes are also used to help set the tone of the poem.

Overall,

I'm excited to see where the future of motion design goes and to (soon) be a part of an industry that fosters growth and embraces experimentation. There's still so much I want to learn and explore, and it's so thrilling to see the industry continuously expanding and merging with other creative fields.

Once again, thank you for taking the time to go through my work, and please feel free to get in touch with me at byisabellek.com
