Here are two of my projects during my time at Academy of Art University, a summary of my one and a half years of study in 3D modeling.

English Harquebusier

This is a model of a harquebusier from the English Civil War era. References were gathered from museums, archives, and photos from historical reenactments.  The goal of the project is to recreate a soldier model as close to the available historical evidence as possible.

Props

Most of the hard surfaces were done in Maya. Yet, the fine details on the hand guard of the sword and the stock of the carbine which I sculpted on a higher subdivision level then exported to normal maps in ZBrush.

Portrait

For the portrait of the character, tertiary detail and color were painted by hand in Substance 3D Painter with general brushes and alphas in procedural PBR workflow.  Although eyebrows and eyelashes were fiberMesh from ZBrush, Xgen was the option of grooming for this project.

Buff Coat & Gloves

In this project, I familiarized myself with Marvelous Designer to achieve a more realistic look on the buff coat and gloves by simulating with a simple animation I created.   Prior to the simulation, Meshes had been retopologized in Maya, which was easier to do in a neutral pose.

Chun On Pawn Shop

This storefront was based on a real location in Hong Kong, with high resolution texture on a simple model.

I created all of the textures in procedure workflow with only general brushes and alphas that come with the software, other than using material preset, or projection. I also made good use of bump and roughness channels for a more intricate and believable texture without sculpting.

On the tainted glass on the second floor, for instance, adding bumps to the surface gives it an uneven, wavy look when interacting with light. Yet they are all flat surfaces. On the marble wall, I put texture on the roughness channel, and let the reflection reveal the grunge on the wall.
