Dylan Collins - Concept Art Rookies 2023
Hi everyone! Here is my entry for the Rookies 2023. This is some of my favourite work I've done between my second year and third year of studying at CDW Studios/Flinders University.
Snowy Forest
In a post-apocalyptic world covered in parasitic remnants that caused the destruction of mankind, a survivor's plane crashes in a frozen tundra where he must now try and survive the harsh weather and the Parasite that's still ever-present in this unforgiving landscape.

Underwater mining factory
In a dystopian future, a SAR CORP mining factory has been abandoned for years due to a chemical explosion that destroyed most of the factory and covered it in a haze of radiation. A scientist has been tasked with exploring the site to try and recover any useful research that was left behind.

Sci-Fi Vehicle & Mech concepts
These two concepts were created for a hypothetical update to the game No Man's Sky. When coming up with these ideas, I had to consider not only the visual design but also the game mechanics. I had a lot of fun thinking about the functionality of how these additions would fit in the game and the value they would bring to it.
Studies
These studies were referenced from movie stills of Puss N Boots The Last Wish and The Bad Guys by Dreamworks. The art direction from both these movies really inspired me to switch up my art style to be more stylised and painted. These studies were a great way of getting comfortable with that style while also being a fun exercise.
Fantasy building concepts
This first concept is a blacksmith building inspired by Mediterranean architecture. I used a 2D and 3D workflow for this concept. Thumbnailing in 2D moving into modelling it in Blender and back into 2D for final touches and paintover.
This second concept is a Fisherman's hut. Like the first concept, this was created using the same 2D and 3D workflow.
These are the first iteration of thumbnail designs for this concept. I made many more changes to the original design based on feedback primarily in the proportions of different shapes.
The Structure
In a post-apocalyptic future; Giant metal ruins scattered across the planet are the only remnant left of a civilisation after our own. A soldier from the past is stuck in this time and must explore this future civilisation's ruins to find a way back home.
