Justin Armstrong | Creatures and Characters
Hello! My name is Justin Armstrong. I'm a growing artist in the 3D space and am so excited to transition into this industry from traditional work. For my entry, I'll be sharing a creature I made and a fan art of Swain from the League of Legends Universe. I'm incredibly excited to share them with you.
The Hound
Concept by Justin Armstrong
The goal of this one was to just combine and condense all of what I'd learned so far as a self-taught 3D artist into something cool. I love creatures and took on the overly ambitious goal of concepting, designing, modeling, retopo, texturing, and lighting him. This project taught me so much and will certainly inform any future 3D endeavors. I'm proud to announce that it took first place in CGtrader's 2022 Fantasy Creature contest.
Process
Here are some images of various process steps. Since the creation of this project, I've learned a ton about the full process of developing a professional asset. I plan to revisit this character one day and optimize the pipeline I'd use and create him again. I'm also attaching a very early look at the concept and some coloration variety I was playing with during the project.
Swain
Concept by Riot Games
I'm a huge fan of Arcane. This is a television show created by Fortiche and Riot Games. I'm fascinated by the Art style implemented in the show and as a player of League, a gigantic fan of Swain and his lore.
The goal I set out to reach was to develop my own reimagination of Swain and how he may look in the Arcane universe. As many know, the show is heavily stylized and implements a hand-painted look in post-production. My goal was to make small personal adjustments to his hair, face, and armor, hand paint him to an acceptable level, light him in a way he may appear in the show, and finally bring him into Photoshop to paint him.
Process
Here are some early looks at his face and a couple clay renders of the Zbrush sculpt in addition to my reference board.
Thank you
for viewing and helping me on my journey.
I just want to thank TheRookies for hosting such an important contest for the futures of so many young artists trying to break into the field. I also just wanted to acknowledge how incredible the huge community of 3D artists are and how receptive people can be to the new guy badgering them with questions.
A couple years ago, I found myself sitting in my office doing work that I knew wasn't right for me, my family, and my future. I jumped headlong into 3D as a self-taught artist and knew this was what I wanted to do. I was able to learn so much in my free time and will continue to do so until this is what I wake up and go to work to do every day. I'm a fast learner and love to figure things out and adapt new software.
Thanks for giving me a few minutes of your time to see my work!
Feel absolutely free to reach out with any questions you have or even just for correspondence.
Thanks again
