Wildlife and vegetation
Hello everyone! I am glad to share with you some of my student projects. I find in nature a great source of inspiration. It is one of my favorite subject to work on. I hope you will enjoy seeing my projects!
All aspects - Orangutan
I really enjoyed working on this project. It was my first grooming project using Xgen and it was really interesting to analyse how the fur reacts in real life, to expect a better render of it.
Character design
Here is a grooming school project based on an animal of our choice.
It all started with a character design. Using photo and video references of sumatran orangutans. I have done many sketches and posing studies of the animal, to finally decide I would make it in 3d. I got inpired by this animal, its shape, and the vivid orange color of its fur. We worked on this project for 7 weeks and I really enjoyed the reaserch phase, where I could learn a lot about the texture of the skin, the shape of the fur and the aspect of it. This is what I like the most in working on wildlife.
After a rough sculpt, we could focus on retopology. It was a good way to train to have the cleanest model possible. Then, we could dive into grooming, discovering Xgen workflow for the first time.
Head and skin
The very first sculpt of the head was done in Mudbox. I did the retopology of the character in Maya. When I was satisfed with a good topology, I went back to mudbox to work on the displacment and bump of the skin. With time and observation, I understood that the skin of an orangutan was pretty similar to leather. I went on this track, to get the aspect I felt was the most accurate, to give this very dry and rough look on the face with lots of wrinkles.
You can find above the steps: modeling, sculpt , lighting ,shading, texturing of the head
First experience
It was my first grooming project, I was quit happy to discover Xgen and the possibilities it offers. This project was very fulfilling and interesting to make. I love to work on wildlife and the researches for this little monkey were fulfilling and inspiring !
Lighting
The lighting I wanted for this project, was a sharp and constrasted lighting. Almost as if the photo was taken in a studio. For this animal to appear more imposing and to enlight the vivid color of his orange fur, to make it look interesting to watch, I have chosen to highlight the left side of his face with a strong key light and to detach it from the background I used a rim light, that helps giving relief to the groom.
All aspects - Lily Flower
Here is my project inspired by a pink Lily flower. The goal of this project was to focus on creating a single organic item, to model, scult and texture the details of a Lily Flower.
The texturing was done in substance and the shading and lighting in Renderman. I also added small sculpt details on the petals of the flower using Mudbox. A bit of compositing was done in nuke.
Here are the breakdowns of the lighting as well as the modelling and texturing
The challenge here, was mostly to give this "fragile and delicate" aspect, with the use of the transparency and the SSS.
All aspects - Banana tree
The red banana tree is a colorful tropical plant that can become very tall ! The challenge of this project was the texturing part mostly. The color variations on each leaves, going from dark red to green were hard to reproduce ! To make this plant look more organic, the modelling had to show variations too! I liked all the process in making this beautiful plant in 3D. I enjoy to work on colorful items and play with a saturated color palet to catch the eye and the interest of the viewer!
Thank you for taking the time to read my article and to see my projects ! I hope you liked it as much as I liked creating them !
