I'd like to introduce you to the work I did for the final project during the Foundation Term at Think Tank. I chose this concept because I was impressed by the amazing artwork of Bo Xun Lin, which served as a significant inspiration throughout the entire 4-week project. It was a major challenge for me as I had always wanted to try creating stylized characters.

Creation process

To begin with, I attempted to match the camera settings in Maya to align my models perfectly with the concept. After establishing the initial details of the environment, I exported the camera and interior to Zbrush and commenced sculpting the characters. Subsequently, I performed retopology to eliminate any artifacts present in the wireframe.

Next, I ventured into grooming using Ornatrix, which proved to be one of the most demanding stages of my work. However, I managed to overcome the challenges.

Following that, I proceeded with the texturing stage in Substance Painter. Initially, I faced some uncertainty regarding the creation of textures for the stylized characters and environment. Eventually, I decided to combine techniques in order to achieve a blend of stylized and realistic materials such as leather, fabric, wood, and others.

Lastly, I reached the final lookdev stage. In order to replicate the lighting depicted in the concept, I positioned numerous small light sources and planes. The planes were utilized to reflect light onto the models' surfaces, achieving softness in certain areas and pronounced shadows in others. In total, I ended up utilizing 208 lights and planes!

In the final step, I proceeded to render in Vray while adding the environment fog. I also made slight corrections to the render in Photoshop.

Gratitude

I would like to express my heartfelt gratitude to the talented artist, Bo Xun Lin, for his exceptional artwork that served as a constant source of inspiration. I would also like to extend special thanks to Mieszko Lacinski, the supervisor of my group, for providing me with incredibly valuable feedback throughout the project. Additionally, I am immensely grateful to my friends and classmates for their unwavering support. Without all of you, this project wouldn't have been possible. Thank you all so much! :)
