I'm happy to share with you this 3rd year selection of projects done at ESMA 3D Animation School. I try through 2 years of study to test various environments in scale to tell captivating and unique stories through compelling pictures. I hope you will enjoy!

Round of applause for our sponsors

I've learned a lot in the last 2 years. After the fundamentals of 3D in my pocket, I've been able to experiment and test different workflows and new software. I appreciated to develop long projects from sketch to the result, trying at every step to build compelling images telling stories.

BLIZZARD

BLIZZARD is my first short film animation experience.

In the middle of an Antarctic storm, an inventor's drilling machine stops working. Red with anger, he lashes out at his machine and takes the karma when the huge drill bit crashes to the ground and throws him off. Anger solves nothing.

I have always been fascinated by the environments of the ice deserts. And I wanted to transmit this passion for an untamable nature to the screen. I was also mainly inspired by Steampunk universes and machinery like Atlantis, Treasure Planet, Jules Vernes stories, …

Everything is done from scratch, from the script, concept art, sculpt and modeling, texturing, lighting, animation, look development, rendering, compositing, FX, editing and sounds.

The character rig and modeling is from the ESMA movie "La Boîte".

CONCEPTS and RESEARCHES

GHOST CRAB

Born in July, the crab is my zodiac sign. I've always loved these misunderstood and ignored invertebrates. With beaches increasingly covered in garbage, I wondered how Nature would adapt in the future. So, I imagined a knight Ghost Crab with his sword straw and beer cap shield. He reigns supreme over this deserted and polluted beach.

I worked on the first idea, a quick concept, lots of lighting and references research, sculpting and modeling, texturing, look development, lighting and compositing.

I was my first experience with ZBrush, Mudbox and Xgen for hairs. The hardest part was the detailed sculpt but also the subsurface amount of the shell. Making this cartoonish animal look realistic was a real challenge.

DIGITAL PORTRAIT

This third year, I worked on a 3D portrait of another student at ESMA. It was a very long exercise with many steps:

Thanks to a photo shoot on a cloudy day, I was able to use a photogrammetry base to then use Unreal Engine and Metahuman to create a smoother avatar but with a rig. I then had to take this smoother model and rework its topology and sculpt it to fit the student details in real life as closely as possible.

I spent a lot of time working on the eyes and abedo thanks to another cross polarized shooting photo to get rid of speculars and keep all the skin details and variations.

Another time-consuming job was the fur on Xgen and all the shading and look development of the skin, which is particularly difficult because of the ease with which the human eye perceives the defects of the skin.

It's very fine work and detail within detail. I enjoyed this project because it allowed me to learn to train further on fur and look development.

Special thank to Camille Lecture for serving as a model and help for the fur part:
