No Offense- Look Development

by mpeng on 31 May 2023 for Rookie Awards 2023

Hi! Here I'll showcase one of the latest projects I did last year for the Advanced 3D Production Master degree at Animum Creativity Advanced School (2021-2022).

I spent all of last year's summer developing this project, it was worth the time and I'm really proud how it turned out. I thought making a look development inspired by the John Wick film would be cool. The film is really eye-catching for its neo-noir aesthetic throughout the entire saga.

I was in charge of the lighting, Xgen hair, clothes, environment modeling, shading, lighting and composition. It was modeled in Maya, textured in Substance Painter, rendered with Arnold and composed in Nuke.

The character was provided by the school and it was animated by Mario Diaz.

Some of the props were from Quixel Megascans, it helped me great with the scene and made it look more classic.

One of the few struggles I had was the clothes, it took me many tries to get it behaving properly without making weird deformations, at the end I had to reduce the topology of it. Another challenge was the animations of the hair, it took me many simulations to get it look ok.

I was excited to model something hard surface so I applied all my knowledge of a few months in this weapon.
