Kaisin Qiu 2023 Portfolio
These are some of the pieces I enjoyed making dearly at Ringling College of Art and Design. Many of them are inspired by my friends, family, and my culture background. The rest are inspired by late night 3AM thoughts in bed and doodles in class.
你好呀 or hello there :,)
My name is Kaisin! Some might confuse my name's pronunciation as "raisin" with a "k", I also go by Kai. I am a designer and animator from China who enjoys what I do as much as I love my ramen. In May 2023, I have just completed my BFA in Motion Design with a minor in Business of Art and Design at Ringling College of Art and Design. . When designing, I enjoy exploring different styles and mediums to better communicate and appeal to my audience.
Here are some of the projects I have worked on that brought me great joy. Hope you enjoy them!
The Little Chair - A Narrative Story
The Little Chair is a story I have had in mind since the start of my senior year in college. This piece was created to be my thesis in the end, telling a story about growth, strength and being who you are. Through my journey traveling from US and China, back and forth while I was growing up, this was part of the lesson I learned and can finally reflect on.
I am very happy of how this piece turned out, even though it will probably always be a work in progress with some improvements being made. It was such a great experience for me to direct, produce, design and animate a story that belonged to me, and now it can inspire others as well.
Here are some process of me trying to make sense of my story. As you can see, initially my main character was not a chair but a little ladybug.
Late Night - Design & Animation
Late Night is a looping animation project created in Photoshop, C4d and Ebsynth. The brief of this project was to create a design in Midjourney AI, then use your own knowledge and make an animation inspired by the AI piece.
Philips HUE - Ad
The brief for this project was to create a series of frames which communicates the key features of Philips HUE lightbulbs, while simultaneously develop a visual language for future applications in a campaign.
This project was made for a class I took learning Maya, rendered with Arnold. I learned how to design in a 3D space and direct every little detail.
Here are some other little experiments and process I have learned along the way in Maya.
Windows - Music Visualization
A music visualizing piece based on a brief with Universal Production Music, collaborating with Yael Bloom.
The first challenge for this project was to find the music. After a few hours on Universal Production Music's website, Yael and I decided to go with something fun and quirky, with lots of beeps and bops.
After the story was determined, about a little green guy going a dive into his mind with his memories, it''s time for design! We both wanted to do a little bit of mixed media, so we added cel elements within the 2D graphic shapes.
And finally, we designed the album cover for our piece, and created a mockup for what it would look like on Universal Production Music's website.
Despoina - Design & Animation
Despoina is a phoenix project I did. I retextured and designed the models, with the inspiration from surrealism art. The nail models were sculpted in C4d, textured and rendered in Redshift, then all composited in Nuke.
Perplex - FutureProof Branding
With my friend Jessica Buck, we pitched this branding package alongside with a proof of title sequence, to our school Ringling College of Art and Design, Motion Design department as the 2023 FP branding. Even though we were not chosen, we were picked as one of the four finalists in our major.
I wanted to depict and celebrate all of our creativities and craziness inside our head as motion designers. You think of elegant statues one second, the next you are adding a fish and burgers in your frames. I wanted to embrace those "hummm, what about..." moments in this piece. Even with all that weirdness that doesn't make sense to some, to us, everything is ALL GOOD!
Motion Design has been a passion of mine for quite a bit, and it's not just because of the programs I learned, or the new design style I experimented with, but also the amazing supportive friends/future colleagues I have made along the way. With all of you, I am more than confident heading into this field as a professional now. Thank you all for your love and support!
Best,
