A path of opportunities

Alma Elvira Rangel Osornio
by AlmaRangel on 14 May 2023 for Rookie Awards 2023

A little over a year and a half ago I finished my degree, and for a while I thought about doing what others expected of me, but I chose to do something that I loved and that would allow me to keep fighting to just keep breathing. My architecture degree gave me many tools, and one of them was Architectural Visualisation

Throughout the past year, I have dedicated myself to improve the skills I had with the software I learned during my professional studies, and I gave myself the opportunity to learn other new programs, which fills me with pride to know that I can master at an advanced level, however, something I have learned is that you never stop learning. In the last few months I have had the opportunity to enter fully into the world of CGI and the design of environments in greater depth, this has allowed me to reach the level at which I am in Architectural Visualization.

All the projects that I present below, I have done during the last months of this year, hoping that over time I can continue to improve and continue with the path of opportunities that my career has given me.

House KT

The first project is a kitchen, dining room and living room of a house, I started with ideas from other projects and from them I created an architectural plan. All projects are ergonomically planned for the comfort of each user. The measurements of the cupboards, the furniture, as well as the recommended spaces for the day to day transit in the space.

Having a long experience in the design of architectural drawings, I usually think of projects in 2D, however, something I have learned is the importance of the use of references and how they can allow you to visualize more easily the 3D design of your project, with this I can think even before modelling the space, what type of furniture or material is best for the design.

All the furniture that I presented here I have modelled in Blender and the others I have put from my personal 3D library as well as from Chaos Vray.

Although in these projects: the program, flowchart and other more technical aspects of architecture I don't strictly take them, I think they are always unintentionally present during the design process.

Software used: Blender, Autodesk 3ds Max, Vray and Photoshop.

Coffee CS

It's never too much to have a nice place to have coffee and spend the afternoon, I recently visited a place like this when visiting friends, so I used it as inspiration for this design.

The composition of the space allows a great entrance of light and lets you see everything around you. The disadvantage is to find the perfect balance so as not to burn the image, and not to create a space that looks uncomfortable for people, I have modelled the whole space, including some furniture and details.

Software used: Blender, Autodesk 3ds Max, Vray and Photoshop.

Office and boardroom

The design has the ceiling as the main element and the one that gives a great composition to the project. The space contains little natural light, which allows the artificial lighting inside to illuminate the space in a more pleasant way.

The project shows a duality between the simplicity of the space design and the complexity of the ceiling design, I wanted to highlight that characteristic with the flooring material, which changes between the office space and the boardroom and blends into the central courtyard area. Connecting visually and not only physically both spaces.

This specific project allowed me to experiment better with the exterior and interior lighting of the place. I modelled the entire ceiling and space design in Blender and exported it to 3d Max where I added the textures and furniture.

Ceiling design

Software used: Blender, Autodesk 3ds Max, Vray and Photoshop.

The following scenes were made with the intention of seeing the speed at which I could make a project from scratch, first I compiled a series of references of different spaces and then I modelled each design in Blender to then continue with the final composition in 3ds Max and Vray.

Study spaces

Although they are short projects, I try never to neglect the functionality of each space and its placement with its surroundings.

Living rooms

These projects allowed me to play with light and time of day more easily as the rendering time was considerably reduced due to their simplicity in both design and size of each project.

And finally a workspace inspired by this new way of working from home.

It was one of the simplest spaces that I had to model, during my search for furniture, I found a folder in my 3D library that allowed me to assemble this little scene.

Software used: Blender, Autodesk 3ds Max, Vray and Photoshop.

Last but not least, one of the biggest projects I have done, not only in scale and complexity but in time, was a mixed-use building, the original design was from the first version of my thesis, which changed drastically with the different evaluations I had, I decided to use it in a totally different environment than the original and modify certain parts of the interior and exterior. The whole model was made in Revit and then I moved it to 3ds Max for its final composition, as well as the application of materials.

Software used: Autodesk Revit, Autodesk 3ds Max, Vray and Photoshop.

Thank you if you made it to the end.

These are just some of the projects that show how much I have advanced since the beginning of my career until this year, I am grateful with the tools that architecture has given me to continue with the dream that I currently have of entering a studio and start working professionally. Thanks to Architectural Visualization I can dedicate myself to something related to my career and at the same time enter the world of 3D art and modelling, never ceasing to learn day by day new tools that allow me to keep improving.

I can't wait to see where the digital world takes me.
