Hi there!
I'm Lee the Deer

Here’s my 2023 Portfolio. Hope you enjoy

Epiphany

The project is about my understanding of life so far. In our lives, we go through so much frustration that seems meaningless, but in the end, we find the answer. The EPIPHANY moment will come at the end.

Concept

As humans, we are born into this world with no memory or direction. As we grow, we start to discover the purpose of our lives. We suffer and struggle through various emotions, which can bring us tremendous traumas. However, through these frustrations, we discover that misery actually has meaning, rather than being nihilistic.

To better present my idea, I divided this story into four parts:

P1. Before form - a part of the universe

P2. Incarnation - shock, unease, and constraint

P3. Escape - suffering from various emotions and pains

P4. Acceptance and Epiphany - living out the rest of our lives.

Process

Modeling, Animation, MoGraph
C4D is such a fun software to learn and explore. I require a lot of motion effects to enhance my scene. For instance, particles, water droplets, breaking walls, and falling paper. To achieve this, I experiment with different sets of MoGraph effects in Cinema4D. It can be challenging, but it's also a lot of fun.

Sketch Shader
Shaders are another important role in this project as they align with my visual look and bring out the overall vibe. I used Sketch and Toon to generate the sketch shader, mimicking Wayshak's style.

Cutting Grass

This is a title sequence for a short animation called Cutting Grass. This film is around 11 minutes long and tells a story of vengeance. For this project, I created a 90-second-long title sequence for the film.

Concept

I started the project with a couple of ideas. In the end, I decided to treat this title sequence as a prequel of the film and supplemented the information that was not included in the film, that is, the background information of the characters’ relationships. My main title’s narrative aims to imply the reason why the girl embarks on the journey of vengeance.

Design

Textures and Elements
Cutting Grass is a horror movie. In order to align with this genre, I used smoke-like, ink-like brushes and liquid, blood drops elements to create a horror atmosphere.

Logo
For the logo design, I used bold, unruly calligraphic strokes to showcase the film name, which has an intense meaning. The film title“翦草” is excerpted from a Chinese poem, and the excerpted sentence is “殺人如翦草.”If translated directly, it means “slaughter people like cutting grass,” which is parallel to the plots of the film, in which all the bloody and violent scenes take place.

Color Palette & Typeface
I used a bold and saturated red as my main color to present the violent feeling of the film. Additionally, I integrated bright yellow varying my overall visual look. To present text credits, unlike the logo, I chose a neutral Chinese serif font, for it can be read clearly and not distract the viewer’s attention from my main narrative.

Nothing Gold Can Stay

I chose Robert Frost’s poem "Nothing Gold Can Stay" to create a storyboard project. The poem is beautiful yet conceives sadness and helplessness. This is my first time to use a tactile approach to present a topic. The experience is demanding but fun.

3D Sci-Fi  Graphic Design

For this project, I aim to use 3D as a main element to create a sci-fi design look. I Started out to create the spline and the sphere element in Cinema4D, and then rendered them out to do the cinematic effects in Photoshop. I also added some decorations and texts to finalize my design frames.

Breakdown

Robot Swing Me to the Moon

This is a music video storyboarding project I made for a song, called “Robot Swing Me to the Moon.” With the brisk vocal and vibrant rhythm, I felt that it could be an interesting topic to visualize.

Design

Colors & Narrative

I used a straightforward color palette from their existing cover album to continue their design look and to maintain the familiarity to their music fans. I also found the lyrics are quite funny. So, I used Sketch and Toon to create a cartoony style so as to bring out the fun and interesting storytelling and visual look.

Character Design

According to the lyrics, I found that it is a story regarding someone who wants to grow up to catch up someone they admire. Therefore, I designed two forms of a robot to present the change and growth from the protagonist.

Bonus:)

I used this the robot model to play with some Redshift shaders I made.
