Martin Morant - Student Digital Compositor
This is the first time I am applying to The Rookies competition, and I am very proud to be able to present my 4 personal projects. I'm a compositing student and I hope this competition will bring me visibility and why not an internship.
The shots shown in my demo reel been part of 2 collaborative projects with a friend
of me. To realize these 2 projects, I take Rogue One and The Batman as movies
reference. The live action shots were shot with anamorphic lenses to discover new
workflows, but also to have a specific image look. When I was on set I have
recovered all the specificities of the anamorphic lenses (distortion grid, bokeh, lens
flare, …) to improve the “realism” of the full CG shots.
-The first full CG shots is certainly one of the most difficult and laborious shot I ever
made, this shot represent best my current level and skills in compositing. In this shot, I
have done set dressing, look dev (hyperspace and planet), lighting,
rendering and compositing. The animation of the spaceships was done by my friend Macéo Chavey. For the Compositing part, my 2 main challenges were to have a credible and “realistic” CG, but also reproduce in a faithful way the hyperspace tunnel of Star Wars, only with Nuke. We could have had a better result by reproducing it in Houdini, but I am rather satisfied with the result I achieved in Nuke because it allowed me to discover many techniques related to 3D and UV's in Nuke.
- The second shot in live-action is also one of my flagship project, in which I was
involved in the set dressing, look dev (wet ground), the lighting, the rendering and the Compositing. The longest part in compositing was the tracking part because of the lenses used (Anamorphic lenses) I had to spend much more time than on a shot with spherical lenses, to have the most perfect result possible. The matte extraction take time too, the rotoscope part was very long because we are a little bit under exposed, and we have a lack of picking in the shot. So it was hard to see and understand all the details of the actor in movement.
-The third shot was also in live-action, in which I wanted to reproduce one of my
favourite sequence in the Rogue One film. In this shot I take care of the environment,
set dressing, lighting and compositing. The animation of the spaceships was done by my friend Macéo Chavey. The most difficult part was the pre-production when I analyse the Camera movement of the original shot. The camera movement in space and the focal lens were hard to find. This time spent analysing my reference allowed me to save time during the shooting, the tracking and when I set the position of the virtual camera in the 3D space.
-The fourth shot echoes the first one because it is part of the same sequence. The
main objective was to have a “realistic” CG. When I was on set with the Anamorphic
lenses, I shot lens flare references that I have matched after in compositing.
Personally, I find that filming his own flares references is more interesting and funny
than trying to reproduce it in compositing.
Thank you for reading my Contest Entry. Don't hesitate to give me feedback, it will be very helpful to improve myself.
