Stylized Characters Collection

Rebecca Bonjé
by RebeccaBonje on 15 May 2023 for Rookie Awards 2023

When I am making new characters I try to implement all my passion for art so that they can come to life in my fantasy! This collection contains several characters from various assignments, mostly done as a student. They enclose my learning path, as a student who never worked with 3D before, to game ready characters!

Girl With Her Knives

This is my most recent project, done in the summer to practise on sculpting, retopo and texturing. The lovely concept is from Khoa Viet, "gurl with her knives" which immediatly made me have a warm and happy feeling. This inspired me to make a 3d character out of it!

I taught myself, with the help of tutorials, how to make baked straw in substance painter to optimize the character. In order to come to this result, I did some research on render methods in blender to fine-tune the final product

Finally I wanted the character to have a nice and warm feeling, so I made a little swamp environment with fireflies that gave that cosy atmosphere. I'm very happy and proud with the end result !

In order to make this project , I first started examining the concept. Imagining how to create her in 3D, grouping parts of the concept and planning the workflow really helped me sculpting the model. After that  I looked up reference of different materials, workflows for straw and wool, style reference and props.

When I was making the blockout I made some draw-overs to give myself feedback on proportions and anatomy. I realy wanted the model to be as close as possible to the concept.

Here is also a Sketchfab link to the project, and a link to the Artstation post

Voodoo Girl

I made this model based on the amazing concept by Wu Xiaojie. The concept gave me a very strong and confident character vibe, which made me want to transform it in 3D. I wanted to focus on anantomy and stylized props, which were really fun to make, and give them personality. I had a lot of fun making this project!

This project was sculpted in Zbrush, retopo in Maya, textured in Substance Painter and rendered in Blender.

I tried to make some good topology with this model and have polyloops to have enough polies to make nice edges.

Chimera

This was one of my first stylized characters. I liked the serious and proud look of the creature as if he is deeply thinking about something while he is slowy nibbling on his food. The concept is from Cole Marchetti's "Fantastic Beasts" series. I tried to give the sculpt a nice and clean look with beautiful and smooth edges.

In order to get the anatomy right of all the creatures, especially the lion's head, I gathered reference and asked feedback on my model. This way I could really focus on the proportions of the creature.

After this I painted the model in Zbrush and later textured it in Substance Painter. I wanted the colour to match as close as possible with the original concept.

Orc Girl

This was my first full character sculpted in Zbrush. I'm really proud of this one because I worked a lot on it and I think it was a nice start to my series of characters. It also inspired me to delve deeper into character design. Since I instinctively made it with some stylization in it, I looked deeper into other stylized styles and characters. I'm very happy that I could make this project as a test in school with the help and feedback of the teachers.

I really had fun sculpting the face, different armor and weapons, learning how to use different brushes and placing it all together to make it one entity.

With this project I learned a lot about zbursh and how to model in it. This gave me insight on how to use the tools and work faster in next projects.

The blockout mainley focuses on the anatomy of the model so that the rest of the objects can easily be placed on it. This way the object should not be moved again and this saved me some work.

Cyberpunk-Inspired Bust and A Little Tea shop

Here are my first two sculpting projects as a reference to the rest of my post. With these two projects I got to taste the fun of sculpting for the first time. Since I never worked with 3D before starting at this school, I really liked the idea of making something in 3D like you would make something in clay in real life. You really have the freedom to form the mesh like you want without thinking too much about everything. With some technical knowledge you can make it as it is in your head almost immediately.

The face of the bust is inspired on the actrice Tilda Swinton. I could already imagine her in a movie about Cyber Punk as a Corpo boss that has all the strings together in her hand!

Next up is my little cosy diorama of a tea shop with herbs and dimsum. I combined several concepts I liked to come to this scene thanks to Alyona Usmanova, Dandi, Jae Cheol Park, Anna Usenko, Rick van Soest and Khoa Viet their lovely concepts!

I, myself a dedicated tea drinker, would love to take a break to drink my tea between the bamboo trees!

These are the props I made for the diorama:
