Shyanne Russell 2023 Environment Art Reel
"To Live Within Giants" is my most recent personal project I created using Unreal Engine 5. The concept is a ruined post-apocalyptic city that is in ruins and populated by various destroyed Robots that scatter the city. A small population of humans live in this city, primarily within the hero prop 'Robot Skeleton' where it still generates power that is also shared amongst the other inhabitable buildings.
I wanted to create a post apocalyptic scene that was an in-between of complete ruins and crowded rebuilt city. Often times we see one or the other when it comes to these types of stories and environments, but never the middle phase where it's just starting to be populated and rebuilt.
I was heavily inspired by the Horizon Zero Dawn franchise, as well as The Iron Giant.

Geybox concept to final render
I created a few modular kits to build different types of buildings for my scene. One was a newer building which was the Sci-fi Building, then I created a destroyed High-Rise Building. I then assembled them and created a Unreal Blueprint for each of them.
I also reused a few assets from some older projects, including an old Chevy car model that was designed and used for a PS1 Silent Hill styled game jam demo, where we only used 256x256 resolution textures. I hid it down the street behind some tree debris but wanted to include it into he scene to fill it in more, so I added this old car model and hid the fact that it's style and resolution didn't quite match the scene.
I used a variety of Megascan assets for my scene as well. I used and edited a few building prefab kits to create another unique building blueprint. I also used Unreal Engines "Open World Demo Kit" from the Epic Games store for the trees in the scene.
My original concept came from a NeiR Automata image which I used as the base for my concept since it had the right perspective, scale and aesthetic I had envisioned for my scene. I then altered the contrast and color of the image to make it look like night time, and then I painted a rough concept for my robot skeleton prop.
Here are various environments I created in 2022
