3D Animation Reel 2023 | Seyed M. Tabatabaei
I am sharing my latest animation reel that includes a selection of recent AnimSchool assignments, along with some pieces from a personal animation collection called “Artifficult”, which I have been developing for a while.
Fundamental concepts of animation like timing, weight, balance, body mechanics, body acting were the core topics I’ve been honing my skills around during the courses I completed so far at AnimSchool.
The Body Acting class was instructed by Jean-Luc Delhougne. We were asked to propose three ideas along with their story thumbnails. The following concept was chosen for its highest clarity within the given approximate time limit.
I created the scene by combining some CC-licensed assets (credits) together with the ones I modeled in Maya and Blender (background weapons). Following is an inspiration board I prepared for the Batman action poses, props, set design, etc:
Here is the progression from the initial blocking to spline passes and the final result:
Body Mechanics was instructed by Michell Jao. Here are some of my doodles for an idea I had in mind for the Obstacle assignment, as well as the mood board I pitched in the class before animating the character.
Another assignment for the same class was to animate a character running and jumping. It was just before the 2022 FIFA World Cup started, and the football vibe was on. I went for a goalkeeping action, and aimed to make it a looping animation like in the previous assignments. The main challenge I encountered involved the forward steps my video reference character took before the jump. To address this, I had to reverse his steps back during the mirrored action to ensure he ended up on the exact original spot at the end of a full cycle. (music credit | asset credit)
Here is the progress:
The Animating Character course was instructed by Kelly Vawter. The final assignment was focused on interacting with heavy objects and to understand and execute the concept of weight and force. As part of my exploration, I also experimented with synthesizing the music of this work.
Following is four sections of the progress from the first blocking pass all the way to the final shot:
Studying and experimenting with VR/AI for the past few years has heightened my concern about the potential risks of the ever more powerful and immersive/persuasive technologies.
Artifficult is an ongoing personal project; it is a collection of micro-looping animations that explores the blurring boundary between our increasingly intelligent living artifacts and our own seemingly more unconscious unanimated selves.
I used Blender for modeling, rigging and animating the characters for the parts I included in this reel, and also rendered the scenes using Cycles and/or Evee. Here are some of the viewport/render comparison views.
