Little Gryphon

by RacheleManzo on 19 Apr 2023 for Rookie Awards 2023

Little Gryphon is the first project I've realized during my journey with Skyup Academy for the Z-brush module. It is a cartoon character sculpted in Z-brush and rendered in Maya 2023 using V-ray. The post-production was made in Photoshop.

Little Gryphon is the first project i've made during my journey with Skyup Academy for the Z-Brush maquette module. The sculpting was made in Zbrush, rendered in Maya with V-ray. The post production was made with Photoshop. Above there are the final renders of my maquette. Below you can take a look at the process that brought me to the final renders.

This is the reference from which I took inspiration for my project.

The next step was the study of the figure. For that i created a file with Pureref, collecting real references to use during my sculpting. For my project i researched images of different animals, mainly focusing on references of birds (in particular the Frogmouth specimen) and cats for the back of the body.

After the studying step, i created a first blocking in Zbrush, strarting from a z-sphere. Then i've refined the sculpture in differents steps, adding more dettails and correcting the measures.

My last step in Z-brush was the sitting pose of the character, made using Transpose Master in zbrush.

In Maya I then created the set for the final render of the maquette, placing the different lights and cameras. After several trials, for the final render I choose to use an orange and teal light effect, to emphasize and highlight the cartoon style of my maquette and the initial concept.

The last step was the post-production in Photoshop. I tried to improve the influence of shadows and lights to bring out the details of the sculpture and make the figure less dark.

These are all the steps I took to reach my final result.
