My CG Starting Point

Mairan Li
by Mairan on 8 Apr 2023 for Rookie Awards 2023

I took my first step into the world of CG in October 2022 by enrolling at the Think Tank Training Centre in Vancouver. It has been my lifelong dream to work in the film industry, and I am finally feeling like I am on the right path towards achieving this goal.

Hello there! Welcome to my Rookies Award 2023 entry!

<Summoned> 3D remake

This is my first personal CG project, I have finished this project from draft all by myself in around 2 mouths. This project is based on the concept illustration <Summoned> by Denis Zilber

- Final

I utilized Maya to block out the scenes and refine all of the props, then switched to Mudbox to sculpt the characters. Using Mudbox's paint tools, I painted their diffuse color. After handling all of the UVs, I exported snapshots and utilized Adobe Photoshop to work on texturing. Finally, I rendered the final scenes in layered formats via Vray and composited them within Photoshop. Of course, I incorporated fire effects prior to exporting the final image.

Creature Bust Zbrush Sculpting

This personal sculpting project was created as a means of studying anatomy. The creature's design was influenced by Keith Flint's impressive stage appearance as the lead singer of the UK's legendary electronic band, The Prodigy, as well as the iconic mythology of the lizard man.

Sci-fi Helmet - Hard surface sculpting in Zbrush

This project served as a way for me to enhance my understanding of Zbrush tools. Initially, I utilized Dyna-mesh sculpting to design the rough look of the helmet from a single cube geometry. Subsequently, I created the basic mesh of each component in Maya before importing them back to Zbrush for further detailing via sculpting tools.

Tentacle in Telephone

This exercise project was completed solely in Maya and aimed to enhance my modeling skills, specifically in topologies and creating organic shapes through vertex modeling workflow.

Ganesha Statue - Texturing Studying Project

For this project, I utilized artist Vijay Singh's Ganesha 3D model to practice my texturing skills. Using Mari, I painted and edited all of the texture maps before applying them to Vray for rendering.
