The Canoe Criminal
A young woman's camping trip is interrupted by the disappearance of her record player and solving the mystery of who or what took it ensues.
Contributor roles:
Marley Yambor - Director/Animator: Marley oversaw the progress of the team and provided creative direction for the film. She made storyboards and an animatic for the film and pitched the idea. She also animated the scene of the robber escaping in his canoe.
Imi Hunter - Producer/Rigger/Animator: Imi kept the team organized by crafting production schedules and compiling shots. She edited together the final film and made sure everyone stayed on task. Imi also helped out with rigging the reed assets that can be seen rustling in the film. Additionally, she helped animated the scene where the main character picks up the flashlight and sneaks toward the water.
Ryle Sammut - Modeling Lead/Animator: Ryle made many of the assets and the scene of the film. He modeled the trees, rocks, grass, dock, and many of the other objects seen throughout the film. Ryle also animated the beginning shots of the film which included the main character setting up her campsite and falling asleep.
Sean Cygan - Rendering and Lighting Lead/Animator: Sean worked on the rendering part of the production process. He lighted all the scenes and tweaked the render setting until the shots look perfect. He also worked on the water effect that can be seen in the film. Additionally, Sean created the chair asset for the film. Sean also animated the scene where the main character peeks through the reeds and sees the criminal holding the record player in the boat.
Izzy Heape - Sound Lead/Title and Credits/Animator: Izzy designed the title and credits that can be seen at the end of the film. She also found sound FX and music to add atmosphere and realism to the film and edited them together so that they would match up with the actions of the characters. Izzy also animated the scene where the main character wakes up and finds out the record player is missing.
Asset Use:
The assets we used were found on free-for-use websites and helped us to get the film done in a timely manner. For this film, we had a 10-week deadline to create all our assets, animate, and deliver a final product. We used premade assets for a couple of objects including the motorboat and the record player. These assets allowed us to have detailed objects in our scene without going through the process of modeling them ourselves.
Work Flow:
Throughout the project, we followed a specific workflow maintained by Imi that allowed us to progress through the project and meet our deadline.
Storyboard and Pitch: First we pitched our ideas with a storyboard and then an animatic. We voted on which story ideas were most appealing and fit the 10-week deadline and then began to move on to pre-production.
Pre-Production: Marley provided Ryle with sketches of the scene layout and assets and Ryle began modeling for the film. Sean also helped out with this stage and Imi worked on rigging the reeds for the scene. All contributors also worked on the rough layout of their scenes.
Production: All contributors finished up their layout and moved on to blocking and finally onto polishing. Throughout this process, there were several critiques where we discussed camera movement, acting choices, and the technical aspects of the scenes.
Post-Production: Sean created the lighting for all the scenes and worked on rendering them for the final film. Izzy worked on compiling the sound and title. Imi edited together the final shots once Sean had finished rendering them and the team gathered to discuss final adjustments before concluding the project.
