Retro Japanese Arcade

by Giallo on 9 Mar 2023 for Autodesk - RIG.B

This is my vision of Autodesk's RIG.B., what if he worked as a personal assistant in an old japanese arcade that got closed and he got fogotten in a deposit for the last 40 years? Well now he's all dusty and ready to explore this new world and find a new purpose for himself!

Update - 9 Mar 2023

Hello! Maybe a bit too late but I've decided to join this contest with my version of Autodesk's RIG.B.

I've had few ideas but what I decided I'm going for is actually a retro inspired version of japanese iconic pop items, such as vending machines, videogames consoles and gunpla models. Here's a little billboard with my inspirations:

So, as you might see, at first I was just looking for different kind of everyday item that had a huge impact in matter of aestethic and recognizability in the Japanes pop culture, but what really gave me the idea for this robot were all the mechanical components that videogames consoles have. I took inspirations from arcades and pachinko's rooms and so it came the story of a robot built to work in those specific environments as a personal assistant to clients, but once it got obsolete and maybe the arcade closed off, it was turned off and forgotten somewhere in a deposit and now since it's been rebooted decided to find another purpose exploring a new world 40 years later. What it really worked for me was the palette of Famicon and Gunpla, with that strong red and some bright yellow touches here and there, and with some parts borrowed from gashapon machines such as metal and lables. I like the idea of him being built with different elements frome those items.

What I did at first was a general layout of the colours I was going to use, to see how the worked together and how it looked from a distance, I think I got a good balance between the main three colours.

Then I started with the materials, I started from the head with the white grainy plastic, added a height map, and some scratches, then I put a couple of yellow layer to simulate where the plastic was more exposed to the light and in the end I added a few layer of details for the additional dirt and dust.

For the yellow and red plastic I added a directional noise to convey the texture I wanted and the added a couple of layers of roughness for the scratches and the ruined edges, with some dust and dirt in the end.

For the eyes I wanted to convey the old LCD screen type of texture so with the help of a fine noise I mixed two layers of metallic, then I really wanted to use the "dotted" texture instead of the pixellated one and created the pattern for the eyes. After giving it the right glossiness from the screen I've added some dirt and dust to make it more believable.

In the end, I've also worked on the "jet" parts and simply added a couple of lables to resemble the gashapon handle you have to turn to make it release the toy.

And for the moment this is what I've worked on, I've applied the materials I made so far for all the components and I have to modify them for each piece of the robot so they can be work the best with the rest still, I'll keep this project updated the best I can, if you have any suggestions please don't hesitate to reach out to me, keeping in mind this is a wip and it need a ton of work still.
