Creation
Art from Kevin Merriman
Update - 25 Nov 2022
Here is the animation I made as well.
Update - 25 Nov 2022
This is the base for the composition so far. There's still a lot to do.
I have to finish texturing everything, work on the lighting and composition more, make the effects for the animation, do the background, Make the 3 Main bots look more like robots, model the smaller robots' hands xd, and make A LOT of tweaks,
and I'm still not 100% on the framing, so I'll still be editing and changing things, but I have a feeling the final result is gonna end up looking very different as I change my mind and try multiple ideas a lot.
In regards to texturing, I'm doing all of it in substance, and I have started texturing the 3 top bots and they are about 90% done. I'm trying to go for a very stylized look which means 80% of all the textures are handpainted, but I'm also making use of a few generators to help. It is quite difficult to avoid the temptation to rush the texturing because I don't have much time, but I also need to show how much substance can alter and improve a model just by texturing but I do feel confident that it will be complete.
This was the composition I came up with initially. The main Idea Is to make it look like the happy bot is being created by these "God" bots. I also Plan on doing a looping animation, but a very basic one. Hopefully, I can get everything done before the due time tomorrow. I will be doing a few different iterations of this composition until I come up with one that works.
I started by Modelling the Bots on the right concept art then I did the one on the left and then came up with a composition I thought would work.
Looking at both of these I created an image in my mind that I knew if I could create this just like how I imagined, it should look amazing. Surely.
The two concepts above are what I decided to switch to and this was actually a combination of the two pieces.
I had initially asked to do his amazing stormtrooper art and had already started modeling but later realized that technically the stormtroopers aren't robots, and since Kevin Merriman gave me the option to model his other designs I decided it would be a good idea to switch.
Well With not much time left for the contest I decided to change my concept once again, BUT for the last time, I believe this piece will be able to showcase good modeling and texturing to hopefully win the challenge as I was not too confident that I would be able to show enough detail in the texturing with the previous concept and it wasn't as challenging.
Update - 5 Nov 2022
I still had a few stuff to fix like the warping of the iris, the uneven spacing between sections and the space under its eyebrows isn't the same as in the concept so I had to fix that as well.
I also did a quick cycles render with the basic materials I added to see what it would look like with similar lighting as in the concept.
I have already made a lot of progress since the overall shape and topology of the Scarobot is fairly simple, I also made his iris in a blender with a cylinder but didn't really worry about edge spacing since I just needed the RGB image and rendered it to use.
Update - 5 Nov 2022
So I decided to change the concept I was using after a while of thinking about the criteria and the main things that were desirable from our projects. I am still planning on finishing the stray concept with substance tools regardless since I asked for permission from the artist I imagine they would want to see their art in 3D and I would want to see if I can really pull it off and create it properly, but I have decided to switch to a concept art created by Adrien Cantone and Soanja Connac.
Update - 30 Oct 2022
I have modeled its hands, but I made a few edits and there are a couple of changes I need to make, like his arms are too long, and I need to make his thumb look more "thumb like". I also made the back of the grey part separating his upper body and head shorter because it looked like the back and front were mirrored. Once I make the changes and finish its legs I still need to do the coat, straw hat, and any other small details, then I can move on to the others.
Update - 30 Oct 2022
More progress has been made today with the modeling. There are still a few more details I want to add like nuts, bolts, wires, and more inset detail to the parts I have modeled so far. I still need to finish the rest of its body, edit the proportions a bit, and model the straw hat and the coat. Then I can move on to the other models before doing the UV's and texturing.
Update - 28 Oct 2022
This is the modeling I have done so far for his head. I changed the style of his "ears" a bit and I'm planning on adding more insets and details whiles also trying to keep the topology correct since this is all SubD modeling so avoiding triangles and Ngons is necessary. I also added very basic materials in Blender to help visualize the model a bit before I UV and texture it in substance painter cause right now I just used the cube project UV option and gave it very basic materials while using photoshop and the gradient and wave node to make his face shader, but I will also recreate this in substance Painter
Update - 28 Oct 2022
I've done the base shape for the first robot to make sure I get the proportions right. Now I will recreate each piece with correct topology and more detail.
Update - 27 Oct 2022
This is the art I have decided to use.
Permission from the artist.
My main process right now is to create a basic set of models to get the basic shape of the whole scene, then I will go in and recreate every model with the detail it needs even though the robot's design is quite simple ill add some topologically advanced details to try and make it more difficult and hopefully make it more realistic, and move forward from there.
