Euler, The Ancient Colossus

Entry for the Adobe Robot contest. Starting with concept and idea. Euler is a big magic-powered robot, made using ancient technology from a long-gone culture. After centuries of shutdown, the old golem was accidentally activated, but his artificial mind wasn’t as lucky as his well-preserved body.

Update - 25 Nov 2022

And here we are, the final render! I've used everything I got with the time I had, so I'm really proud of it!
I had to scrape many parts, redo some and be really creative with the solutions, which I would love to share here but I'm a little low on time, unfortunately. Definitely one of my major difficulties with this project was managing it together with my job and other responsibilities. but in the end, I did it!

I hope you like the final renders of Euler, and little Nori, having a warm moment together in the forests.

I made a shot to make them feel like miniatures, after all, they came from an RPG session, and it came out so cute *- *

And here's a quick export to Sketchfab for more info about textures and mesh data.

Update - 24 Nov 2022

Going all out here, I finally reached one of my favorite stages of production, texturing!
Baking was a really difficult task, as I had a LOT of objects to track names, and five materials: Body, SecondaryBody, Hair, Right Arm, and Backpack. As the final render requirements are 4096 x 2160, I've baked most of the maps in 4K too, since one of the great things about Substance, is its adaptative resolution, let me change which resolution to work any time. For someone with a less-powered computer like me, this is a total game changer.

Here are some quick updates on the texture:

I like how Euler is coming out really colorful and vibrant, besides the dust and dirtiness. I have plans to make some childish drawings in the armor, drawings made by Nori, really eager to see how it will develop!
Hopefully, I'll have time to make a little breakdown of the texturing after I've finished everything.

Update - 23 Nov 2022

I've noticed that I didn't send the final highpoly model on previous updates!
Almost missed it, but here are some quick prints of it. Everything made on Blender.

Update - 23 Nov 2022

After a lot of time I, unfortunately, am in a total hurry!
All the work at the job and life things completely drained me to nothing in the last days and I couldn't work much on Euler, which deserved better. But I'll give it my all in this 45 of the second half!
Quickly dropping some updates on his retopology and UV mapping, which will probably change after baking mesh maps on Substance.
This retopology took a really long time than I predicted, don't underestimate it!

Update - 28 Oct 2022

Lots of work was done this time and I've started to detail some parts with bevels, seams, and other stuff. I'm glad he didn't lose much of his shape with that mane and braids (which I made using well-known  Geometry Nodes), also, the horn and bunny ear gave him a lot more personality, so I'm starting to see clearly what I want the final model to look like.
Next, I want to reproduce more of the ancient pattern I made in his core on other parts of his body and make some worn-out armor. One or two more iterations and I'll start the retopology, so I should be okay with the schedule.

Update - 27 Oct 2022

Most of Euler's body was hidden in my concept, so I had to think about a nice body for him. I took most of my inspiration for the shapes from Bard, from League of Legends, and Baymax, adding my own twists to them and I think it turned out with a pretty good silhouette. I want Euler to pass the image of an uncanny, but honest, parent, so I've tried to balance round shapes with some hard corners, to get some of this "cute but hard" feeling. In the next updates, I'll be showing more of the "fluffy armor" and cute trinkets Euler integrated into himself in order to be more comfortable for his child.

In this step, I've blocked most of the major shapes of the highpoly body, my plan is:
 - Highpoly Model (Blender)
 - Fine Details (Blender)
 - Retopology (Blender)
 - UVs and Baking (Blender and Substance Painter)
 - Texturing (Substance)
 - Extra Assets and Environment (Blender Substance)
 - Lightning (Blender)
 - Render and Compositing (Blender)

Update - 26 Oct 2022

“As the big robot seals the hole of fiendish monsters an astounding silence sets in, a weird silence, in fact, considering the little newborn child laying in the cold, hard, steel of the colossus's bigger hand. Not a single cry, neither any sign of discomfort from her, just naiveness and pure curiosity pouring from big, round, amber eyes and an uneasy feeling of something melting inside the chest of the iron giant, odd, as it never felt anything before at all…”

I'm a bit late with my first update for the Adobe Robot Challenge, but I'm eager to it!

Euler is a big magic-powered robot, made using ancient technology from a long-gone culture. After centuries of shutdown, the old golem was accidentally activated, but his artificial mind wasn’t as lucky as his well-preserved body. Without a clear purpose, his primal north was simple: to search and learn new things.

After some decades of loneliness, the ancient robot found his real motivation in a little newborn girl, birthed in horrendous conditions, in the middle of a disaster caused by some hobgoblins kidnapping the wrong merchant, and summoning the otherworld monsters of the Tormenta. Injured, her mother died giving all her forces to the birth. Euler's partner gave his life to rescue her from the brawl. And in the end, only they survived. Led by a bigger force inside itself, Euler now takes care of the little Nori, learning the hopes of parenting and teaching her about the world.

I liked this RPG character so much that I did a concept for what he would look after some ears taking care of Nori, and I loved it! I'll use this as the main guide for my model development.
