Sheeba - The Shy Robot
Sheeba is finally finished, and I'm super happy with what I was able to achieve in this short period of time.
I am so glad that I was able to create an idle animation as well, as I usually try to do that for each character I create. It brings them to life to a whole different level.
Thanks to the Rookies and Adobe 3D Painter for hosting this challenge. It's always fun to get a reason to try something new, and now I have another cool looking character to add to my portfolio...! :)
Thanks again to Logan Preshaw for letting me interpret his unique 2D concept.
You can check out his original concept here: https://www.artstation.com/artwork/aR2KGX
Feel free to check out my earlier updates to see my progress. ^^
Thanks for reading, and good luck to everyone!

Update - 8 Nov 2022
It's finally starting to look finished, but I've still got a lot to fix in the texturing...!
The scene has now been set up, the character has been rigged, posed and animated. (I'm super happy that I was able to make an animation!)
So far I'm happy with the result, but as I mentioned earlier, there are a few more things I need to refine in the texture.
Update - 7 Nov 2022
I'm still working on the texturing, but I felt like throwing the model into Marmoset Toolbag to start building the scene. I am working on the rig as well, so sadly it isn't posed yet. I'm still planning on making a small idle animation, so I think the rig will be worth it in the end...! :)
This is what it looks like so far:

Finally time for texturing!
See my progress here:
Screenshots of my materials:
I decided on changing a few things in the texture as compared to the concept. I wanted it to look more metallic, shiny, and worn down. I tried finding a balance between cartoony and realistic. I gave the background a slight more of a cartoony look, as to separate the character a bit from the background.

Another update! (Working on it a lot this week!)
I've made a bake in Substance Painter, and I just wanted to share it:
Sadly I had to make the ears a bit shorter, as to make sure they don't clip through the arms.

Time for retopology... and another update!
I just finished the highpoly sculpt of the character. To save time, I decided to use the lowest subdivision level as the lowpoly, but I had to redo some parts. Below this text you see a Maya screenshot of the current progress of the lowpoly and UV-mapping. Everything is done for the lowpoly, and the green parts have also been UV-mapped.
I am working at big school project while participating in this challenge, so I only have time to work on it after school for a few hours a week. It's super exciting to create this character though, so I am happy to sacrifice my spare time haha. :)
I am happy with the progress so far, and I can't wait to bake it!
I am also planning on recreating the background present in the original 2D concept, as I believe it will look supercool...! (I will rig the character as well, so we'll see if I have time to make an idle animation).
Seeing a finished character move is one of the coolest things.
Update 1:
Update 2:
(The test bakes did not turn out as smooth as I wanted, so I'm thinking of using this much more dense model instead, since the character will not be used in a game. Although this version isn't very optimized, I think it will look much better in the final render...!)

Update 1 - Blockout and Highpoly:
(I will keep updating this post with new WIP-photos until the highpoly is done)
So far I've made a blockout and started to refine the shape and parts of the body.
I've spent lots of time trying to learn how to efficiently use the ZModeler in ZBrush. My goal is to use only ZBrush for the highpoly, then do the retopology, UV-mapping, and rigging in Maya. The texturing will of course be done in Substance Painter.
I'm super excited for this challenge and will do my best to finish in time, and to learn as much as possible while doing so!
Current state of the Highpoly: Done! :)

Update - 20 Oct 2022
Welcome to the start of my entry!
For this challenge I'll make a 3D interpretation of the concept called "Sheeba" by Logan Preshaw. My goal is to make it look as much as the original concept as possible.
When I saw the concept I instantly started imagining a 3D version of it in my head. I think it will be the perfect fit for this challenge, especially since the character is painting (and the contest is hosted by Substance 3D Painter)!
Usually I make organic creatures, so this will be a fun challenge.
Thanks again to Logan Preshaw for letting me interpret his amazing concept. :)
