Multifunctional briefcase
Design Brief Samsonite assignment: Design a product or solution to store or transport work materials -in an office environment- or from office to home. My solution consists of a briefcase with an integrated laptop stand, laptop case and push to open drawer feature.
My solution is a briefcase that shapes into a desk organization space. The briefcase easily becomes part of your workenvironment. It includes a laptop compartiment that transforms into a laptopstand and a drawer. The integrated drawer is used as an organisation tool. It is designed so users can declutter their desk with ease.
Unique features: A laptop compartiment that changes into a laptopstand when opened.
A drawer to easily declutter your desk.
The briefcase can be transported by a removable carrying strip or a handle. The dimensions are 24x37x9 cm.
Ergonomics: The dimensions and angle of the laptop stand are defined by a user test. The user test consists of 3 people of different hights. All of the users used a setup of books and a laptopstand to define the most comfortable and ergonomic angle. They had to write a small text and play a game to see if after a while their position would change or stay the same.
I made a cardboard mockup of the concept, and tested the user flow. I changed the model according the data that came out of the test. Some conclusions of the ergonomic testing were:
1) The angle of 20° was preffered by 3 users of different heights.
2) The protector of the drawer was made in 3 even pieces. If this folds into a triangle to support the laptop, it has an angle. I have to change the dimensions of the protector to have a straight surface for the laptop to lean on.
3D model, production techniques and materials:
The 3D models were made in Solidworks, exported as an OBJ and rendered in Blender.
Production of the biggest/ most important parts of the product:
The bottom shell, upper shell and outer drawer are injection moulded. The draft angle of the parts is 2° outward. These parts are modeled in a way they could be produced. All these parts are made of polypropylene.
The organisation in the drawer are 2 vacuum formed parts made of ABS.
Further, details and closure are made in the same way I observed in already existent Samsonite cases. Injection molded parts are made and fastened from the inside of the case (for example the handle strap). A silicone edge is sewn on the edge of the upper and bottom cases to make the case watertight.
Some standard purchased parts include: a drawer conductor which can hold up to 45kg, a flap hinge that keeps the laptop stand at 20° and a hook to attach the carrying strap
