Characters & Creatures for Games

Sydnie Brant
by Oruakuma on 1 Jun 2022 for Rookie Awards 2022

Hello! My name is Sydnie! I've been studying Game Art in Cardiff for three years, and then never really produced any 3D artwork before then. Here's my selection from my final year at the University. It's been quite the journey.

Vampire Bat

Six-week project to create a game-ready character or creature asset from an existing IP. I did a vampire bat inspired by Tomb Raider, updating the design with the context that this would be an interactable enemy within the game. Had a lot of fun doing one of my favorite animals. Main renders are below. The hair cards in this project were made using Substance Designer and hand placed onto the model.

Katherine Puscifer - Frigid Vampire

A bigger project where I designed and reimagined aspects of vampires and did my own take on them. To push myself, I focused on interesting anatomy and clothing. I wanted to take a less supernatural route with the design and based much of the design around the idea of creatures that thrive around the polar nights. This allowed me to steer away from gothic attire or leathers. I had a lot of fun with this project and learned a lot from it.

Main renders and wireframe below. Final Polycount 28,600 (not including hood fur). Snow base 15,625 (Zbrush Subdivision 3 for ease)

1 Week Art Test - Doug the Mechanic

For this project, I was tasked with creating a mechanic character within a short amount of time, based on research I conducted regarding jobs. I chose to give myself the time limit of 1 week and do a likeness sculpt of my Godfather due to many companies using scan data or replicating models.  On top of that, I was cheeky and asked my uncle if I could use his company logo, to which he said yes. Once again, a very enjoyable little piece that I thoroughly enjoyed working on.

Main renders and wireframe below.
