Batteries Not Included Dino-bot Animation
For my college end of first year project I had to take a scene from a movie, create a clean plate out of it and then add in my own model and animation.
For my college project I had to take a scene from the movie Batteries Not Included and remove one of the robots, making it a clean-plate. I would then use this plate to put in my own 3D modelled and animated Robot.
I used Nuke to rotoscope out the robot and it's shadow from the scene. I had to animate the rotoscope to move with the robot to avoid missing any areas.
I used Zbrush to create my model, I then imported it into Maya to rig and animate. Finally, I imported it into Adobe Substance 3D Painter to texture.
My model is based mainly on BD-1 a droid from the Star War video game, Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order. I also referenced his build on dinosaurs, such as the Velociraptor.
This video shows the processes of how I got to my final shot.
This is my final shot.
I began by creating the clean plate in Nuke. I then created proxy geometry here so I could capture accurate shadows on my character as well as animate his position correctly. Once I imported my final render from Maya back into Nuke, I used rotoscoping to adjust my shadow pass and to create a fake reflection of my character in the glass shown in the scene.
