Spirit of Hang Nadim
Hang Nadim was a young boy in Singapura, back when the island was known as Temasek. When shoals of swordfish attacked, Hang Nadim's ingenuity saved the village and its people. As part of our modules in Nanyang Polytechnic's Motion Graphics Design Course, we students would undertake an industry project. In these projects, we would get to work with real world clients and the opportunity to showcase our works to the public.
One of our clients, Malay Heritage Centre, wished for us to create a short video retelling the tale of Hang Nadim. The tale itself details an ancient folklore about how a boy named, Hang Nadim stopped a shoal of swordfish from attacking Singapore but was later killed by the jealous king. Our work would be showcased on a digital screen in one of their final exhibitions before they would close for construction.
Immediately, my team and I decided upon utilizing 3D animation. Using Cinema 4D, we modelled our assets and rigged our characters. Then we composited out scenes using Adobe After Effects. Any 2D elements we had were created in Adobe Illustrator. We wanted our work to be kid friendly whilst grasping the dramatic tone of the story.
