Bachelor of Media Arts VFX Projects
Three separate shots that I worked on during my Bachelor course at the University of South Australia.
A hand reaching through the other side of a portal to grab something
This was a team project that I worked on as a student at Rising Sun Pictures in collaboration with We Made A Thing Studios. For this shot, I handled the rotoscope in Silhouette, and paint, and compositing in Nuke. The camera track was handled by team member Harry Donnellan, and the portal asset and footage were provided by We Made A Thing Studios.

A man getting pulled into a television
This is a shot that I made in my own time. The concept is that something strange is happening with the TV, and when our character gets too close to it, he is suddenly pulled in. For this shot, I handled keying, roto, FX, and compositing in Nuke X with my own footage. The TV FX was made through a simple particle emitter with cubes and a time blur. To finally push the character into the TV, I used a spline warp to alter the shape on a frozen layer. This was then composited on top of a clean plate that I made during the filming process and mixed in with the action footage.

A jar of marbles smashing on the floor
This was a project that I made as part of my assessment at Rising Sun Pictures, using Houdini and HtoA (Arnold Render). The Idea is that there is an earthquake that causes a jar of marbles to shatter on the garage floor. The jar and marbles were developed by me and then simulated in the scene through Rigid Body Dynamics. The jar was pre-fractured and populated with proxy geo through an emitter randomising the sizes.
The marbles were then created with a procedural asset designed to uniquely shape and texture each marble. Each primitive sphere from the simulation was assigned with a further series of attributes with randomised values to determine type (cats eye or milk), glass core shape, colours and noise maps, transparency, roughness and cracks. The primitive spheres were then fed as a point group into the procedural asset to generate the marbles.
