Colors and Illustration - Rookies 2022
Hi ! Here's my painted work made the last 2 years, heavily focused on story-telling, shapes and colors
Hi !
I am Lou Thoby, a french 3D animation student at MoPA (Arles). I’m passionate about colors, light and story-telling. An important part of my work is based on looking and learning from different mediums and references. I try to apprehend the different mediums as tools, all different but complementary, which will serve only one purpose: telling a story, conveying and idea or giving a little something in the best way possible
Cat's Street
My goal was to work on my 2D/3D skills. I wanted to enhance my digital painting with 3D lighting and compositing, which is also really time-saving, without loosing the initial looks of the 2D work.
It was very important for me to convey a story with a single image. I wanted to play with the surreaslitic feeling of the environnement, and to push the spectator to see the discussion happening between the two cats.
(1) Firstly, I drew the whole line-art to let the drawing convey the shapes I wanted.
(2) After that, I painted a bit of textures and did the color-base to give an atmospheric perspective to the street.
(3) I projected my painting on the 3d meshes. I only made them depending on how I wanted the light to hit, or if I wanted give some specific meshes reflection or different materials. My models serve the painting and enhance it without over-taking it. I lit it, and rendered it.
(5) I finished the painting by using Nuke in compositing, and using AOVs to specifically change details.
Sang-Froid, a Solo Short Film
As my 3rd year project at MoPA, I made a 45s solo movie in 6 months (available here).
They were a lot of constraints, including technical ones. The short time span, both on my overall production time and my film length, led me to an approach the design in a efficient and simple way. We needed to understand where the characters were, who they are and what they feel, without them feeling “out of place”.
To do so, I used camera-mapping, to project directly my paintings on 3D matter. My film was then heavily based on my concepts and 2D illustrations.
I worked on my characters at the very same time, to be sure that the set design and the character design were matching, and incorporing them often, even when the concept were not yet finished, in a same art piece.
My characters, as well as my locations, were based on childhood memories to bring authenticity to the scene.
I used a strong choice of colors (very colorful/joyful in the day, and a red/satanic feel in the "panic" world) to tell the emotions of the little one. I wanted it be located in the very same set, but with an horrific/hellish feeling.
