The Fear Dorcha's Bride and Until Death Parts Us Again

by sophiazwang on 1 Jun 2022 for Rookie Awards 2022

An ongoing personal project I've been working on and off this past year and a half about the descendant of a hero who must find her self and path in a land filled with dangerous fair folk alongside the Fairy Queen's most loyal servant. The latter project is a set of characters I did last summer at Workshop Academy.

The Fear Dorcha's Bride

This is an ongoing personal project to explore how living beings interact and compromise when faced with the novel moralities and perspectives of the other.

On Day of Samhain, where the boundary of the human world and Otherworld are at their thinnest, the descendant of Fionn Mac Cumhaill is kidnapped by the Fear Dorcha on the command of Mab, the Unseelie Queen, to find their "old friends." By her decree, the descendant is coerced to confront the Seelie Queen Titania whose ruinous acts and mad mandates have wrought devastation on the unchanging stability of the Otherworld. Armed with Fionn’s iron spear and an uneasy partnership with the Fear Dorcha, the descendant sets out on a journey of combating an unfamiliar world, rousing her heroic legacy, and bonding with the most unusual of Fair Folk over their differing definitions of love.

Protagonists

Antagonists

Over the course of their journey, the Bride and Fear Dorcha faces two main antagonists, the Prince Indiscriminate and Queen Titania of the Seelie Court.

The UnSeelie Realm

The fair folk realm is the perfect area to explore a whimsical world not quite like our own, an unchanging place  where time holds very little meaning. The UnSeelie realm is a land always encased in moonlight and stars, under the ever watchful eyes of Queen Mab and the protection of the Fear Dorcha.

The Fair Folk

The denizens of the Otherworld come in many shapes and sizes. Though their appearances and personalities greatly vary, there are a few similarities between all of them which are that they are mischievous, are constantly seeking entertainment (This varies from fair folk to fair folk) and an offended fair folk is dangerous and obsessive enemy.

Gameplay

As this project progressed, I realized the different paths the Bride could walk and wanted to acknowledge those possibilities. The player would take on the role of the Bride and work alongside the Fear Dorcha in combat to transverse the Otherworld. The player chooses what she becomes in the end as well as the nature of her relationship with the Fear Dorcha.

Until Death Parts Us Again

This was a set of characters I designed during my summer at Workshop Academy. I wanted to create fantastical Victorian Gothic costumes and delve into the concept of grief, loss and moving on.
