Grace Surmon - Stylised Creature Design
A 3d creature concept inspired by the Gaelic mythology and the ecology of the Hebrides
My goal with this project was to create a stylised design which folded in a wide range of cultural and ecological inspirations from the Highlands. As someone obsessed with the Loch Ness Monster from early childhood I really wanted to do my own spin on her, including references to seaweed farming, plesiosaurs, selkies, kelpies, neolithic carvings and the real wildlife of the Hebrides.
After completing a project with heavy atmospheric lighting I wanted to really play around in Keyshot and see how far I could push it. For the renders and texturing I was actually really inspired by museum exhibitions and installations, and spent a lot of time trying to find a way to get stylised water caustics in Keyshot trying to get the feel of a centrepiece gallery. I'm a massive dinosaur fan and have seen some incredibly lifelike reconstructions in museums and I think under Covid was longing to get a bring a little bit of that feeling into my work, so my concept was basically creating the Loch Ness information centre of my dreams. I wanted the project to work as both a 'living' creature in a wider project and as this 'exhibition' so tried to use texturing which where lifelike but also achievable in practical model making. I would love to take this further in the next year making a full underwater environment and exploring lighting effects and simulation in Blender.
