Round of applause for our sponsors

My name is Jim and I'm currently an art student developing the fundamental skills to work in the entertainment industry someday. After studying film, I decided I wanted to learn how to draw in order to pursue a career in Concept art and Storyboard. This is my first time in The Rookie Awards and I hope to learn more in this wonderful community.

Arcana light

This is a personal project that took inspiration from tarot cards and astrology. The idea is to create a fantasy world with a celestial theme that focuses on making the elements feel magical and connected to the stars.

Creature design

Walking Tower

For a creature design, I wanted to create a giant humanoid that walked at the night with a mysterious yet imposing feel. I got the idea from the tower tarot card and decided to make it stone or scultpure like. After thumbnailing, I chose a shape that had a hole and a star on the chest to illustrate the idea that no matter how big or scary a creature is, it has a soul.

Weapon Design

The idea was to create a weapon with the same celestial theme, so I decided to exagerate some of the general shapes. After thumbnailing, I chose to design the sword with a star on the center, similar to the creature, so the weapon could be used to fight it. The sword has the power of the sun and is effective against nocturnal or moon related creatures.

Character design

Diviner of Stars

I wanted to create a character that felt like a "bright light" of hope, someone who had a connection with the stars and the ability to reveal the future. The image I had in mind was the one of a mystical queen or an oracle. So after looking at some references, I started sketching the idea for the character and the mood I wanted it to have. The character is based on the virgo constellation and she sees a bright future.

Interior design

The idea was to make a throne hall with a more medieval yet celestial theme. I made a first sketch to see the general idea of the space distribution and then added some details. Later on, I made a blocking with 3D shapes in Maya and used it to make the final sketch. In order to make the throne feel like heaven, the seat has a light coming from above and is in a higher position, as well as surrounded by giant statues that protect and pray for the one sitting on it.

Environment design

For the environment, I wanted to make a fantasy scene. While sketching some thumbnails, I got inspired by the draco constellation, which looks like a serpent dragon. So I got the idea of making a wizard summoning a dragon using a waterfall as the portal.

I still have a lot to learn about the fundamentals, but I'm happy I was able to make this first step. Thanks a lot for your time.
