Jesse Hooson - Concept Art 2022
Hi, I'm Jesse, a concept artist from Falmouth University graduating this year. I focus mostly on creature design, but also enjoy other areas of concept art. This is a collection of personal and university projects I've worked on during the last few years.
Creature Project 1
A personal project done for university. This project focused on elements such as improving anatomy, rendering and iteration.
Process
Initial Iterations- silhouette exploration.
Secondary iterations.
Initial Studies. These were done to practice breaking down the anatomy of existing creatures that had inspired the design, in order to be able to later create believable anatomy for a creature that didn't exist.
Anatomy breakdown. Using what I practiced in the earlier studies, I created an anatomy breakdown of the creature that was became useful to refer back to in creating the final render.
Final render of the creature concept.
Creature Project 2
A university project in which I had to design a creature based on the prompt 'mushroom creature'. This project I focused mostly on creating an engaging and easily readable design, as well as shape language.
Process
Iterations 1 - Silhouette exploration.
Iterations 2 - Read exploration.
Iterations 3 - Palette exploration.
Design refinement and linework of the two chosen creatures.
Movement experimentation. This study was done to aid in informing our animator on how the creature would act and move. By this point I had decided to take this one of the two creature through to final render.
Final Render.
The Passage - Environment Concept Art
A piece done as part of a personal world building project to explore concepting scenes with limited lighting and a restricted palette.
Process
I made a 3D blockout in Unity to explore composition and perspective of the piece, as well as to help inform lighting.
First pass- for this step I focused on choosing palette and developing the structure of the piece.
Second pass- here I began refining and made lighting fixes.
Final render. This focused on polish, ambient occlusion fixtures and detailing.
