Creature Modeling and Texturing Showcase

Maxime Titov
by maxfx on 31 May 2022 for Rookie Awards 2022

This is my first ever entry for The Rookies. I'm a third year student at VFX-Workshop, and I would like to show you my best work from this year. I mainly focused on Character creation, and more specifically, creatures.

Round of applause for our sponsors

The first Project I want to showcase was made for my Morphology class with Michel Lauricella, at VFX-Workshop. We were looking at insects, crestaceans, spiders and more, so I imagined this giant spider similar to what we can see in the Lord of the Rings, The Hobbit or Harry Potter.

I made this image by sculpting the model in Zbrush, texturing it in Substance Painter, Lighting and rendering the scene in Maya using arnold, and used Nuke for the compositing.

Here's the Zbrush Sculpt from a few different points of view :

The image Rendered with Arnold in Maya (with wireframe and ambient occlusion renders) :

And a few steps from my Compositing work in Nuke, from the Arnold render to the final image :

The second porject I want to showcase is my main project for this year, which is my final year at VFX-Workshop. I am a huge fan of the Alien movies, and I decided to make a full cgi shot mainly focused on the Xenomorph. The aim was to have a full vfx pipeline, and have an optimised model with a good topology. The project is not yet fully finished, as the Rigging and Animation are curently being worked on by another student in my class.

The sculpt was made in Zbrush, retopology and uv's in Maya, texturing in Substance Painter, lookdev, lighting, and rendering in Maya using Arnold, Compositing in Nuke.

Here's the image rendered in Arnold (with ambient occlusion and wireframe rendeers):

A studio render of the full model, in different points of view (with wireframe as well) :

And here are a few Compositing steps, using Nuke :

I also made a separate render of the environment I modeled for the project. My main reference was the Nostromo ship from the first movie.
Workflow is mostly the same: Modeling in Maya, texturing in Substance Painter, shading, lighting and rendering in Maya, and Nuke for the Compositing.

The Arnold render (with ambient occlusion and wireframe):

And once again, a few compositing steps:

Hope you enjoy my work!
