Paradigm - Student Project
Paradigm is a third person action/survival horror game inspired by the likes of Bioshock and Dead Space. It is my current project in my second year of university and the first game I've ever made.

Paradigm is a action/survival horror game inspired by similar titles like Bioshock and Alien Isolation. This is a project I have been working on within my university for my first two years there, but is the first time I've properly tried to create a complete game. Currently there is only one level, but I have plans to have at least 4 before I finish my final year.
Level Design and Creation
In designing Paradigm I've noticed a massive improvement in my general skillset and this has reflected in the progression of my work. The main challenge for me has always been level design, this is due to the fact that each time I would create an environment or level I would always find a way to improve, this led to multiple redesign and to the final redesign noted below. Getting a hang on a final idea and sticking to it has been surprisingly hard, but it's also allowed my focus to hone in on refining the level instead of overhauling it.
A large help was doing paper sketches which forced me to settle on ideas I had, as there was no way for me to undo a mistake I'd make etc. It also forced me to work with limited space and find ways to make the environment look interesting from a top down perspective, instead of through the eyes of a player seeing it with all of its textures etc.
Character Design for Paradigm
The main character (PROTA) and his companion robot (RUDI) also went through a few major changes, over the course of this game's construction I've re-modeled them both and re-textured them. RUDI in particular underwent the biggest change between the two and now looks a lot better and will be easier to rig and animate for later.
The main challenges for PROTA and RUDI was mainly experiential, I'd never made a human-like character before, the closest I'd gotten to this sort of character creation was a robot made entirely from blocks.
Learning the ins and outs of 3D modelling and texturing, and applying that knowledge was my main challenge as I learned new techniques and ways to texture and model both of the characters. Additionally, during my second year I learned how to rig and animated my model, and currently PROTA is fully rigged and ready for use within Paradigm. RUDI is next to be rigged, and that will done as I finish my second year and head into the summer before my third.
