Alex Lum's Entry 2022

Heathen:

Shunned by the community leaders for his non-conforming nature, Keandre finds himself in a tragic situation when his newborn was outed as being the next harbinger of death and destruction. The desperate father will do anything to save his family hounded by a Community on the brink of collapse from fear. 

These are the artworks I've done for this project.

Concept Design:

The story is set in a post-apocalyptic future whereby tradition and culture have regressed into the olden times but still maintaining elements of the modern society.  The First Calamity both destroyed and created the New World. Seers who were once a community of paranoid clairvoyants climbed up the ranks after the coming of the First Calamity, leading the society with their cunning. Amongst them, Keandre, who saw through their intentions, left the society of his own accord and beliefs, thus catalysing the events of the tale. 

 We've drawn inspiration from the Viking ages and incorporated it into our world-building. Earthy and desaturated tones are used to highlight the 'old made new' in the story. 

Genaine plays the false protagonist of the story. She is portrayed as a confident, reliant friend, who under the mask of kindness and good virtue lies a misguided evil which leads her to betray her friends. I've used the many layers of clothing and concealed tattoos as a metaphor to her personality.

A common wild boar found in the wild. Mutation has caused the boar to evolve to adapt to its surroundings for survival.

The challenge of designing this common transport in this world was adapting modern machinery parts and vehicles to the basic design of a wagon while maintaining its recognizable silhouette. The wagon being horse-drawn by a powerful six-legged horse gave more leeway to heavier designs.

Within the depths of the forests, lies the remains of the Old World. Its ruins encapsulate how people lived before the First Calamity occurred and acted as a temporary sanctuary for survivors.

Keandre's house in their village. The house is reminiscent of traditional Viking homes, however, the house uses modern materials such as steel to reinforce its architecture.

Poster and Key Arts:

A movie-like poster featuring the main players of the story: from top to bottom, Miriam, Keandre, Genaine and The Head Seer. The scene takes place at  the chapel where Keandre seeks refuge and meets his demise.

Miriam's Sacrifice:

Miriam, the mother, uses her body as a shield to protect her newborn when they are shot at by the Hunter. She falls off the horse.

The Betrayal:

In the devasting last act of betrayal, Genaine reveals herself to Keandre that she actually had been leading him to the location of the ritual where the Seers would sacrifice baby Kimball to send a message to the community. 

Operation R

Cy, a mage, living within a hypocritical tech society, finds him/herself joining a resistance group to expose the government for their enslavement of mages to generate power and energy for the city.

Cy, exists as Cyrus or Cyra in this project.  Purple and grey are the uniform colours of the resistance. It highlights the mystery of this resistance and allows the characters to blend in when carrying out their missions.

This creature was designed to kill and hunt within the underground caves. It blends in with cave walls and are sensitive to light. Their sharp sense of smell and infrared sensing allows it to act as both prison guards and hunters. 

The Stragqueen is a lieutenant to her hounds. She stands out with her three-point crown and identifying red stripe.

One Broken Tide

An unfinished Personal IP of mine done during my last semester of college. It is inspired by what made me want to be an artist. I personally really enjoyed looking at character art inspired by Asian culture. And I brought that to my personal work. 

One Broken Tide follows the journey of Ryuu, an apprentice to reunite chosen heroes known as the Tides to defeat Death, an evil entity birth of hatred and greed. 

Feng An is the first Tide Ryuu meets on his journey.

Lastly, I'd like to showcase some of my personal works that I've done during my free time. These mainly consist of fanart and photo studies as well as some original paintings. I have done these practices to find myself as an artist and I still am up till today. Photo studies help me learn light and mood and anatomy more efficiently on the short amount of time I have to enjoy drawing at my own pace.
