Development

Whitefall is a game made by passionate game development students who study multiple different specialisms, all coming together to produce something unique and engaging. Originally, we began with the world in which the game would be set, which allowed us to explore a rich story driven experience.

Developing for the Meta Quest 2

We wanted to immerse the player in a snow-covered world which proved challenging when targeting the Meta Quest 2 headset, which only has a mobile processor.

An example of this limitation was when we developed a snow deformation shader which would leave tracks in the snow behind the player, while it ran perfectly with PCVR, it crashed the Quest 2 when playing standalone.

Another example was with the world terrain. Originally, we attempted to make an expansive 3D Terrain in order to make the game feel like a large open world, despite there only being one route of progression. We created a massive 3D expanse which looked amazing but sadly also wouldn't run on the Quest 2 standalone.

In order to keep the illusion of a large open expanse, we used giant flat panes in the world with 3D images which from the players perspective looks like a massive open world that they can explore.
