Blood to Ink 2D Art

by inspectorclarke on 21 May 2019 for Rookie Awards 2019

This past school year, I had the opportunity to work on a game called Blood to Ink. The game is a 1950s Hollywood murder mystery. I was the lead 2D artist, and I had the chance to design all of the characters and create the 2D objects that the player would investigate.

One of my favorite parts of working on this project was defining a sense of style for each character. I wanted them to dress like they were from the 1950s, yes, but I also wanted their clothing to say something about them besides "vintage." For instance, Craig (next to last) wears a very sharp double breasted suit to express his wealth and ego, while Terrance (far left) wears an ill-fitting plaid sack suit to emphasize how he's a little bit sleazy. Likewise with the women, Nancy (far right) wears a stereotypical cheerleader's uniform to contrast with Margot (third from left), who is more of a rebel.

Because the game is part visual novel, we had to make sure that the characters felt lifelike and entertaining to engage with. We decided that each character would have four expressions-- neutral, angry, happy, and sad.

Elinor (above) is the main character's editor and confidante. Because of her unique role in the story, her angry expression is more offended than angry, and her sad expression is more worried than sad.

In addition to working on the characters, I was also in charge of drawing all of the 2D objects that the player can investigate. This is only a small portion of them.

These objects had to convey important plot-related information while still feeling like they belonged in the world aesthetically. A good example of this is the boarding pass-- I had to research what plane tickets looked like in the 1950s and keep it authentic while re-organizing the information in a way that a modern viewer would understand.
