Procedural Modelling in Houdini
I am happy to present you my Bachelor's thesis! Glad to have spent my final university project on developing my skills in proceduralism.
Procedural Modelling in Houdini
Procedural modelling is such a very powerful technique, that I decided to use is as a topic for my Bachelor's thesis. Can creative artists benefit from this approach as well, even though it is quite technical? My answer is yes! To evaluate this further, I decided to dive deep into Houdinis abbilities and try it out myself. The end result is a procedural generator, that creates houses on a single button click or with an extensive UI.
I took inspiration from the old German towns where I grew up.
The focus of this project was definitely diversity. I wanted to be able to create various types of building shapes with many different types of looks and facades. Do you need a timber house? Go for it! Add some wood paneling? No problem! Bricks? Stucco? A small house? A different color? It is all completely customizable.
How the whole system works:
The system is divided into two smaller parts: The Base System works out the structure of the house, the shape of everything and the window and door placement. The Detail Sytem then adds everything else to the house and makes it look something.
Since the base system only takes a single grid as an input, it is possible to feed Open Street Map Data (or any other selfmade system) into it to create a whole city.
