In the year 2077
Welcome! I made a short animation inspired by one of my favorite animators/YouTubers. I modeled, textured, rigged, and animated this whole project using Blender 2.9 hope you enjoy it!
In The Year 2077
Idea
After listening to the improvised joke from an episode of the youtube channel "OneyPlays" I immediately imagined a couple of funny robots with muppet mouths, so of course, I had to animate that scene.
Modeling
The first thing was using PureRef to arrange my basic sketch of the characters with some reference materials, hard surface ideas, references from Oneyplays, and robots. In the end, I was very inspired by Ratchet and clank, particularly with the mouth shape and eyes because it was going to fit well with the animation style that I had in mind.
Materials
For most of the robot's parts, I decided to use a simple PBR metal material with a little bit of handpainted edge wear. There is also an emission shader that helps sell the robot's aesthetic.
Rigs
Both characters are made with a basic armature but the Chris character also utilizes a lattice modifier to his whole body to give him a more bouncy and cartoony performance. The particular design of the Zach character requires some stretchy arms so I made them with bendy bones.
Although they are robots I wanted to give them more expression in their eyes so apart from their "eyelids" they also have a controller for the "iris" by modifying the scale and position of the eye material.
Animation
To replicate the improvised nature of the joke that this animation is based on, I decided to animate "straight-ahead" The only thing that I made beforehand was the lip-sync so it will be easy to improvise and move them freely. While hearing the original audio I imagined that Chris was in a fixed position mostly enjoying the joke while Zach was excited, intrusive, and using the full extent of his arms.
Conclusion
Hoped that you enjoy this short explanation of my process, this animation was fun to make but also I had to learn a couple of new things in Blender, these types of projects and challenges are something that I am always looking forward to.
