Synopsis: A young man named Tenchi just got back from an exhausting day of school, almost depressing for him really. He wants to make friends, or at least feel like he’s in control, but his anxiety gets the best of him every time. Maybe he just doesn’t fit in. After expressing to his uncle how his day went, his uncle gives him kind words to cheer him up. He’s even making his favorite meal, Saltfish patte’s! This brightened Tenchi’s day, and he realized that his uncle is his true friend.
Beyond Dreams was originally a project that I started in high school. I was always fascinated by space-themed shows, and I thought that it would be a great opportunity to incorporate that into the second part of this film.
The first half of Beyond Dreams is mainly inspired by my grandmother Annabel Dublin Lake. Every Sunday, she’d cook saltfish and eggplant for my family, and we’d gobble it down. No one makes saltfish like her, and she was always wise when you asked her for advice. After she passed away in 2018, I felt devastated. Though, I’ll always remember her for making her famous Saltfish patte’s from her restaurant Lake’s Chicken Fry on St. Thomas.
This film was a fantastic way of showing part of my Caribbean heritage through my films. I was raised in St.Thomas, and it’ll always be my home.
