Angelina Retodo - Visual Development for Animation
Hello! I am Angelina Retodo and I am a story artist/visual development artist currently studying School of Visual Arts. Last Summer, I took the CGMA 3D for 2D artists course, so these are some of my favorite pieces I created during my learning experience.
Preface
Hello!
I am Angelina Retodo, and I am a 2D animator interested in utilizing 3D software to bring my animations and their worlds to life. Here are some of my favorite visual development works I've created in the CGMA 3D for 2D Artist's class. All these concepts are created within a Blender to Photoshop workflow. My process is as follows...
1. Research, reference, and thumbnails using PureRef and Photoshop
2. 3D modeling, texturing, and lighting in Blender
3. Color adjustment and paint over in Photoshop
I am an artist that is inspired by stylization over hyperrealism, so using this process to develop a hybrid 2D/3D style really helps me create the type of work I like. I am primarily inspired by 2D and 3D animated films, and I hope to enter the animation industry as a storyboard or visual development artist.
Cyber-Seafood Market
In this project, I wanted to combine the environmental features of Thailand's floating markets and a cyberpunk underworld. I tried to capture a more grounded real-world feel in this world by referencing my own trip to Thailand and photos from other night markets and streets of Asian cities. On the other hand, the futuristic aspects of this piece are inspired by cyberpunk worldbuilding like Bladerunner, or Star Wars the Clone Wars. This was my most ambitious project since it utilized everything I learned in my class in order to design and manage complicated assets that would bring this crowded marketplace to life.
The Lonely Lumberjack
These concepts investigate a lumberjack that has found himself at peace within the confines of an expansive forest. For this theme, I drew inspiration from Oregon's animated advertisement campaign, and their ability to paint the Pacific Northwest in a beautiful ghibli-like lense. Through this project, I got to experiment with designing and building natural landscapes.
Rogue Vigilante
These concepts are for an action-packed fight scene within a super-powered universe. Drawing inspiration from Into the Spiderverse and Watchmen, I wanted to experiment with comic book stylization through Ben-day dots and hatching textures. Through this project, I got to experiment more with character-driven storytelling and utilizing photoshop to really exaggerate and stylize images to better tell my stories.
Forgotten Temple Ruins
These concepts visualize a long-forgotten temple centered within a lake. Drawing inspiration from Kung Fu Panda, I wanted to really simplify the colors and forms of the temple I modeled to create poster-like visuals.
