Absent

The production of this game was part of our third and final game project at Future Games. We had 7 weeks to complete the course and we worked in a team of five 3D designers and four game designers.

OVERVIEW

Absent is a narrative driven third-person game set in a post-apocalyptic mall during the Swedish 90s.

In this game you play as a broken robot that lost all memories of its past, a robot that now has to collect the missing pieces of its memory by exploring the environment it woke up in.

SETTING AND ATMOSPHERE

The game is set in Sweden during the 90s. To make the player feel that theme we used typical Swedish brands, signs etc.

The brands MF bio (SF bio), GB (ice cream), Lätta (butter) is some examples of Swedish brands used as reference in the project. Besides that, the player can find posters of movies that came out in the 90s.

To set the dystopian mood the mall has closed up shops, and trash laying around. It is also dull and dark to add to the mystery.

SUSPENSE
A mysterious feel and suspense that make the player proceed with caution.

Story Driven
A main story that is told while advancing in the game. Optional pickups that tells a more in-depth story.

COMBAT

Different playstyles. Choose between stealth or action combat.

Protagonist

Rolf, or Roffe, is the main protagonist of the game. The name comes from the brand name, R.O.L.F., short for RObot for the Lively Family.

Before Rolf lost its memories it served the Svensson family. Besides taking care of daily chores such as taking out the trash, cleaning the house, etc, Rolfs main purpose was to take care of the child when the single father was working overtime, which was almost every day.

The Securitas

The security guard is the first enemy the player stumble upon in the mall. Before the humans disappeared they worked as security all over the city. Their tasks mostly consisted of reminding people of closing times or dragging drunks out of pubs, although sometimes they could be tasked with greater tasks, such as apprehending petty thieves or shoplifting kids until the police or parents could take over.

The Clown

Before the fall this robot was every kid's dream. Programmed to please and make every kid happy with ice cream, hugs, and colorful paint. Nowadays it seems to have lost all ability to speak, only playing a corrupted version of the once so friendly tune of the Swedish ice cream truck.
