Motion Capturing a Monster
What is that glowing inside the cave? Once you find out, it's too late. Motion captured with a XSENS suit, cleaned and polished in Motion Builder with added weight for a character of it's size. Modell by Viktor Gustafsson
Motion Capturing a Monster by yourself.
I started by recording my movements with a XSENS motion capture suit, it's a ton of fun recording mocap but there is always underlying dread of the result of the shoot. Once I got the data into Motion Builder I saw all that was wrong, twitchy feet, arms going through the floor and the weight was so far off for a big creature.
I started by stabilizing the feet so they were planted on the ground before I started to add the weight of the character. I retimed the movement and pushed the poses to add said weight. Once the weight felt accurate to the monster, I polished the poses a bit more and made the Walk and Idle animation loopable.
To take my movement, that is quick, weightless and not-monstery, and make it fit a character twice my size (at least) proved difficult, but most importantly, a ton of fun!
