Memento Mori

Life after death is a phenomena that has never been explained by someone who lived to tell its story. The title, Memento Mori, expresses the remembrance of inevitable Death. It doesn’t matter who you are, death comes to all of us. This interactive installation will provide new perspectives on experiencing afterlife firsthand.

The installation was hand-coded using Processing and displayed on the walls with projectors. Webcams and OpenCV technology is used to capture users' motion and let them experience the imaginative afterlife. Users can move around, or reach out their hands to witness the changes of the visual of Memento Mori.

Interactions

When users interact with different elements on the wall, it will produce different animations accordingly. When users walk around the plants, they will wiggle and shake their branches, as they are welcoming the users to the otherworldly realm. 

There are also various creatures present in the scene, they are butterflies, fishes, and dragonflies. The afterlife has many things we don’t know of, and the creatures represent the beauty of the unknown. The imaginary and otherworldly-like creatures in this afterlife installation give a chance to the user to ‘be friends' with them to truly be able to feel that they are in another universe. 

When users interact with butterflies, they will multiply into several butterflies and fly around the room.
When users interact with fishes, they will burst into pieces.
When users interact with dragonflies, they will vanish into dusts and drop on the ground and grow into new flowers. This symbolizes the process of death and rebirth, an inevitable event in our life.
When users interact with waterfalls, it changes color.
