Sea of Freedom
Inspired by historical events, follow the story of a young woman escaping communist Vietnam to Australia by boat, in the hope of building a new future for her family.
Synopsis
Inspired by historical events, this short film tells the story of a young woman escaping communist Vietnam on a boat. Accompanied by her brothers and a family heirloom, she makes her way to Australia to find hope and build a new future for her family. This docu-drama uses real-time animation (Unreal Engine) combined with style transfer technology (Ebsynth) to create a narrative driven short film in the style of Vietnamese silk painting.
The Story Behind 'Sea of Freedom'
As part of the Master of Animation and Visualisation we were challenged to develop creative project ideas based on emerging visualisation technologies.
After multiple ideation sessions working as a collaborative cohort, we decided to explore real-time animation techniques using digital assets such as meta-humans. We then combined these with style transfer technology (Ebsynth) to create a film in the style of Vietnamese silk painting.
We’re proud of what we were able to achieve technically with the creation of 'Sea of Freedom', but also to share the emotional story it tells, inspired by lived experience from the families of students at the Academy.
Meet The Team
As the collaborative group project from the Masters of Animation and Visualisation students at the UTS Animal Logic Academy, the 3D animated short film 'Sea of Freedom' has been developed from the story idea, through all stages of production by the student group under the guidance of the team of Leads who direct and supervise the development and production of the project.
